As a UK citizen,do I need a visa if staying for 49 nights

No.

You can enter Thailand visa exempt for 30 day stamp and obtain 30 day extension.

You most likely need proof of onward flight for airline.

Alternative is SETV.

Thinking visa exempt best idea

Strange, because with the single entry tourist visa, the op would not have to worry about a TM30 or a visit to immigration, surely a preferable situation?
