International Driving License - Holiday in Australia?

I have a Driving license from a European country. I also have a Thai driving license.

 

I want to go on holiday to Australia and rent a car.

 

Do I need an international driving license to rent a car and drive over there and if so how do I get one?

You can drive for 3 months in WA with a foreign d/l including a Thai one, I'm not sure about other states. If you Google for driving info in the state/states you plan to visit you'll soon find the regulations.

You would be on the safe side with an IDP based on your Thai driving license (5 year regular one).

Australia seems to acknowledge the one year IDP (1949 convention) only.

This was the rule in Thailand for decades, so no problem.

You go to your nearest DLT and ask about a one year IDP.

DLT: Departement of Land Traffic ("traffic office"/"motor office").

Which region are you living?

it's an "International Driving Permit" (IDP) not "license".

License from issuing country (in your case Thailand) has to be shown together.

No you won't need an IDP. I've driven in Australia using a UK license a few times and on one occasion I used a a Saudi Arabian one.

If you opt to get an IDP, they are not available at all DLT locations, e.g., Banglamung (serves Pattaya area) does not issue them and will direct you to apply at DLT Office in Chonburi which does.

As long as your licence has a photo, details are in English, you can drive in OZ with it as a tourist.

When I go back to Oz for a holiday I use my Thai license instead of my NSW license to hire a car. Never a problem.

Australians speak ENGLISH.

Your Thai licence is in ENGLISH.

That's all you need.

 

No International needed.
