Pattaya — A 19-year-old man drowned in a pond in Pattaya while searching for clams with his intoxicated dad.

The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, February 21st, when a 19-year-old Thai man, only identified as Mr. Tao, drowned in a pond located in Soi Mab Song, Nongprue sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province.

Nongprue police and rescue workers rushed to the scene to find a crowd of concerned residents gathered around the pond.

Witnesses recounted that Mr. Tao had entered the water to collect shellfish but had vanished beneath the surface moments later.

Divers plunged into the murky water, and their search culminated in the heartbreaking discovery of Mr. Tao’s body submerged in the mud. No signs of physical harm were found on his body.

One would think schools would be teaching kids how to swim...

But being pissed probably wouldn't help.

Senseless waste of life really.

Do many schools have swimming pools? I would be guessing but expect the majority do not.

My school back home never had a swimming pool either but we all learnt how to swim??

My primary one did not, but took us to a nearby secondary school. There they taught me to fear water. My secondary school did have a pool and good staff, who had me swimming in no time. The post I made concerned Thai schools, many give an impression of minimal funds.

Yes funds is always an issue here too.

Our primary school had no pool but bussed us to the river in summer for lessons.  My high school was right on the river so...  In addition my parents enrolled me with a local swimming club plus a local juniour surf life saving club.   It seems us learning to swim was a very important issue for our parents.  I am surprised Thai parents dont also take the issue more seriously, I mean its not like they are surrounded by desert.  Such a waste!

Says he got stuck in the mud........what a way to go similar to cement boots.

i witnessed this in Saudi Arabia years ago,  I arrived just after it happened ...  apparently the two brothers, around 8yrs and 9yrs old went into a dam located 10klms from town,  they jumped into the water but became stuck in the mud and sadly drowned ...  it can happen so easily.
