Mice In The House!

One problem we've had for the last few years is periodic mouse infestation. The mice got above a suspended ceiling on the ground floor and chewed away at the wiring. At different times they have also chewed up the wiring on an outside water pump and an aircon unit. We've also found droppings in built in kitchen cabinets. We have tried traps, including the glue on card variety, but the mice tend to return after a while. I was wondering whether to invest in some electronic pest control devices. These come in the form of an ultrasonic sound emitter or a combined ultrasonic and pulse device. Has anybody tried them or have any experience of how well they work? Most just plug into a mains socket. I have seen UK and EU plug versions for sale in Europe, but haven't seen any in Thailand in the obvious places like Big C or Tesco. Does anybody know who sells them?

Sorry, but they don't work, at least permanently. You may be surprised, but mice/rats also produce sounds in the ultrasonic region and the new sound may keep them away for a short time but after getting accustomed to it they will return.

If they use cyclic frequencies with varying pulse sequences they have a better chance of working in that the rodents don't have a chance to 'get used' to it. I started to design one for our laboratory due to rats occasionally doing serious damage to some of our research equipment. After looking at some research, decided the old fashion way was more effective. The glue traps have always worked very well for me at home. Just need to replace them periodically but keep some out all the time (in suspected areas of traffic such us under kitchen counters, etc.)

Yes, electronic crap is just that. Cats are the only cure I've found, mice are everywhere but the cats DO keep them down.

When I first moved to a house which is standing at a previous rice field and was inundated by these rats. I also thought of all the contraptions. Then there was one stray cat, the ugliest, called for food, my housekeeper fed her. Since then, we have our cost for feeding that cat with the result of the disappearance of the rats. Unfortunately, the cat is now catching young birds which does annoy us.

Cats are the best. If a female, make sure she is nuetered or you will have an infestation of another kind. Also, consider a Ptyas mucosus. One of my all time favorites.

Thanks for the suggestions. Cats do seem to be the best solution. However, the problem is that cats don't go with dogs. We have a pair of fierce dogs bought to keep intruders out, and I've never seen a cat anywhere near the house. We've tried traps, as I said, and they only have limited effectiveness. I think this is because part of our ground floor is single storey and the mice can climb straight up the outside wall into the roof space via gaps under the tiles. I don't know if MacB will be as sanguine if he finds his wiring has been nibbled in hard-to-reach places in a year or two. It took at least 3 years for the problem to show up with us. So overall I am still wondering about other options.

i've had to surround my car in my garage with sticky mouse matts from bigC. they do catch the little buggers but not before they had eaten one off the plastic pipes under my vigo bonnet and part of the heat reflective matting. they are a big problem when you are close to fields. have to keep running my car to scare them away if it stands for long periods.

My house too have mice. We have tried everything as far as sticky traps and the ulta sonic devices. It seems we catch a lot of mice with the sticky paper but they keep coming back. The electronic device seemed to work for a few months but now is worthless. We have 2 dogs so I fear that a cat is out. What else can we do. They are primarily in the ceiling but g-d only knows what damage they are doing up there. We have our house sprayed for other pests (both inside and out) but they spray doean't bother the mice.

There has got to be a better solution. Maybe we try and block them where they come in. I'm pretty sure they crawl up the rain gutters on to the roof and then under the tiles. Maybe I have to put a metal screen in the rain gutter to keep them out.

If you know someone coming up from Oz ask then to bring some Rentokil blocks. They’re little blue blocks of poison about 2” square and ½” high and can last 6 months or more before they’re all eaten.

The rats and mice die elsewhere and I’ve never had a problem with the smell of dead rodents. You only need 1 or 2 placed in strategic locations out of reach of kids and pets.

I’ve found the glue traps work but must have rodent blood in me as I also get covered in the glue.

These blocks are the best solution I’ve found for mice and rat problems.

sticky mouse matts, any 7/11 shop cost 35 baht....

Mouse trap or cage is not so good as you only catch 1 or 2 at a time..... the matts.. the most I got was 23 on 1x mat...

Poisions and cats are out as I have 3 dogs,

On the sticky matts put some food, cheese, fresh meat, they love the dog biscuits..

I've found mice in Thailand aren't partial to cheese or crackers (likewise, I hate crackers), but they've always gone for a bit of fried pork on the glue traps I've used. Caught 14 mice on one mat overnight and then two or three until they were gone.
