Treating Acid Reflux with Magnesium?

Thank you so much, Sheryl, your advice is very much appreciated. "you should not go off aspirin"  You wouldn't believe, but my wife got 50 baby aspirins today which will help me a bit until May 3 when I have my next appointment. My pharmacist had some over and she said she only gives them to us, you know that pharmacies have been banned from selling Aspirin OTC.

Not to sound too headmasterly, but the first priority for you should be to improve your ability to communicate with your doctor(s). You mention a wife, but if there is still a language barrier, take somebody with you who can translate for you well.

You seem to have a number of potentially serious illnesses and no effective health insurance. Neither knowing why medicine was prescribed to you in the first place, and later removed from the schedule again, is both quite worrisome, because you might fall in some kind of expensive intervention quite needlessly, because you did not have proper preventive care.

Then filling up on meds you privately think you need form a pharmacy, again seemingly without much discussion with the specialist there why you would or should do this...

I see a pattern, and I guess you do to. Of course I wish you all the best.

I think communication is less the problem than the level of the doctor and hospital. He is getting care from new graduates with no specialty training at a community level. There are no specialists available at that level of care.

He needs to see (at least annually, and certainly before changing meds like aspirin related to his cardiac history) an actual cardiologist, which means going to a higher level hospital.

In the interim, since the aspirin was prescribed by a doctor based on his cardiac problems I see no problem with getting continued supply from pharmacy, at least until he can consult a cardiologist, which is going to require a trip out of town.

I used to get acid reflux badly for years, especially if I ate white bread or similar. Then I lost 10 Kg and the problem went away completely.

Of all the lifestyle modifications useful in GERD, weight loss is by far the most effective.

But also the hardest to achieve.

I know for myself, I have a "tipping point" weight-wise.  I can get away with up to 5 kilos   over the maximum weight for my height but anything above that and GERD sets in.

OP, why did your doctor take you off the omeprazole ?

I also take this and find it very effective. However, I try to get by on taking one tablet every other day rather than daily. Mostly works out OK. If I get any reflux,  rather than increasing the dosage I just chew on 2 Antacil tablets which bridge the gap if and when necessary.

been taking it for many years and do as you, one pill every 2-3 days and GERD under control, did try many different alternatives such as seeds, tumeric, curcumin, gaviscon and so forth, acid reflux is a very uncomfortable felling

How often do you take it. ?

I'm trying to get off it at present. 2 years on it, with a hiatal hernia as well.

doc said don't need an op. just life style and diet change.

easy said than done.

Also have a hiatal hernia.....they won't operate unless absolutely necessary....brother was left with the most god awful, hacking cough for the last five years of his life......although....I did see an article about a new op and something to do with a plastic insert???

I take 20mg (originally 40mg) at 6am, an hour before eating every morning....if I miss it I know by that afternoon.

Had loads of people tell me just change your diet, get fit and healthy (which I am).....sit up when you sleep...blah, blah

.....all b ollo x......omeprazole is a wonder drug.

Thank you for that.

Yes they work very well, I'm worried about the long term affects of using them every day. so trying to come off them,  but maybe the acid is worse in the long run,  than the omeprazole.

I gave in last night and popped a Miracid 20mg.

I've tried everything else.....nothing else works (for me).

I suffered from heartburn for years thinking it was normal....how stupid can you get?.....doctor went ballistic with me....had a biopsy for esophageal cancer, clear, but the LOS valve looked liked the entrance to hell.

Never looked back since the very first day I took a dose.

Yes, they are good.

I'm going to try a little bit longer.

Trying to find out my triggers for it.

Already, coffee, alcohol, tomato's, chocolate. chili, pussy,  all the stuff I like.

but reckon i will be back on them full time.

We will see.

Thank you for your input.

Same as you, I had problems for years but only after a drinking session. Now I take an omeprazole a few hours before having a drink (which is only once or twice a week now) and no problem. I also have one before taking a kamagra  or it's the same pain.

BTW what's an LOS valve.?

Probably a typo ...

The lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is a high-pressure zone located where the esophagus meets the stomach and protects the esophagus from the reflux of gastric contents.

This is true . My skin below my bottom lip turns to a bright colour red after I have been down there . Takes 2 days to go back to normal . Playing away ? requires planning so as to return home with a natural face colour .

Getting cancer, getting treatment?   leads to many problems, blood clots for one, blood thinners followed by itchy skin, then piss works packing up, bag on leg, awaiting op to get rid of that, then another 3 months to stop blood thinners, a nightmare

I'm a diabetic since probably about 2 decades and among all the medication I take I have been given one omeprazole 20 mg per day for as long as I can remember. At my last check-up on JAN 26 my doctor took me off omeprazole.
Not a good idea. A few days later I developed acid reflux which has persisted to this day. I relieve it a bit by taking half a tsp of baking soda diluted in some cold 7-up once a day.
Then I came across (video link removed by Moderation) of a doctor that prescribes her patients Magnesium. When I further researched I found that one specific type of magnesium to take is magnesium glycinate. Google it, there are many videos about it. I looked on Lazada and found (name removed by Moderation) product which I ordered. It arrived yesterday, so last night I took my first capsule. Apparently there are some fake capsules on the market and I do hope the product I bought is not one of them, since the website mentioned on the container is offline. I'll let you know in about one month if my condition has improved or not.

Who knows that this post might help others as apparently many people suffer from acid reflux.

A quick update. Well, I have taken these magnesium capsules now for 17 straight days, but I noticed absolutely no change. Nothing. The muscle cramps I have when I'm in bed and get up are still here. That is an indication that there is something wrong with this product. Also: there is no website, or the website is always down. I have ordered today another brand which has good ratings on Amazon. Reviews say that users sleep much better and experience no more cramps. Let's see.

And yes, I no longer suffer from acid reflux. I'm back on Omeprazole and Aspirin 81. I'm very happy about this. I must thank Sheryl for her wise advice!

gaviscon will stop heart burn in an instant.  you can buy the singular dose packs at 7-11 around 12 baht.

12 baht? 25 baht at 7/11, 27 baht at big pharmacies 20 at small independent ones. Spend a fortune on them, might go back on Omeprazole took it for 16 years. Seems you can only get 20mg here though not the lower doses so one every two days is worth a try.
