A JOINT light salvage mission being undertaken by United States and Thai navies to remove armaments and other objects from HTMS Sukhothai (FSG-442) which capsized and sank in stormy seas late 2022, killing 24 sailors with five others missing, successfully dismantled and raised three starboard torpedo tubes on the seventh day of the 20-day operation, Matichon newspaper said .

Deployed in the joint US-Thai light salvage mission in the sea off Prachuap Khiri Khan are HTMS Rattanakosin (FSG-441) which is of the same type as the US-built, Ratanakosin-class corvette that sank undersea, the Thai navy’s minehunter HTMS Bang Rachan (MHC-631) and landing craft HTMS Mannai (LCU-783) and the US navy’s tugboat Ocean Valor.

Harpoon missiles salvaged from sunken Sukhothai corvette

Thai and US divers have recovered two Harpoon anti-ship missiles from the sunken HTMS Sukhothai corvette, but have not found the remains of five missing crew.

The two missiles were put on board the US supply ship, Ocean Valor, to be decommissioned. Earlier, a name plate from HTMS Sukhothai and some other weapons were recovered.

The joint operation continues for the seventh day today, to remove the wreck’s torpedo tubes.

HTMS Sukhothai sank about 20 miles from the shore of Prachuap Khiri Khan during a storm on the night of December 18th, 2022. Twenty four of the crew were killed and five are still unaccounted for after extensive searches. The rest were rescued.

After more than a year since the tragic incident, the Royal Thai Navy is still unable to disclose the cause of the accident or who should be held accountable for the loss of lives and property.

Presumably the US doesn't want the Harpoon torpedo technology to fall into enemy (that means China!) hands ..

........or the British made "Stingray" anti submarine torpedos.

Nice of the US to do that favour for the UK.

No mention yet of the recovery of the Italian manufactured "Aspide" AAMs.

All the munitions will come up:

"The Thai government initially pledged to raise the wreck, but the project proved to be too expensive. Instead, it has opted to recover further remains from the site and remove the ship's weapons, munitions and sensitive materials."

Since when was Harpoon launched from a surface based torpedo tube?

They have been tube launched from ships since they were first designed and manufactured.

Air launching came later.

Utter rubbish!

Tube launched yes but not from surface ship deck mounted torpedo launch tubes!

Harpoon has never been launched from deck mounted torpedo launch tubes.

From surface ships they are always launched from either twin, 2x2 or quad canister launchers in ALL the navies that have installed them!

Please see the 2x2 harpoon launchers on the upper deck of HTMS Sukhothai!

I didn't say they were launched from torpedo tubes.....I just said they were tube launched.

I blanked out the fact that Simon43 used the word "torpedo" and actually thought you used the words "torpedo tube" because you didn't know the correct terminology!

Avast behind me hearties!

Whilst entertained by the discussion of matelot etymology, are we agreed that the aim of the operation is to recover a variety of high tech bangsticks from this LGB ( large grey boat) before Fu Man Chu and his gang get their paws on them?

Speaking as a simple soldier...
