Has anyone actually been there either playing golf or staying…if so what is it like?  I understand that most of the Koreans who were there earlier this month have now gone back home.

We have to do the annual family thing in Kanch next week so MrsJ is suggesting afterwards that we have a few days there. It’s quite cheap …700thb all in and 800thb to stay with breakfast.

Also at Bangkok Motor Show I’m told that there is an offer available for playing at Grand Prix golf club if anyone is interested.

At present weekday all in price at Grand Prix Golf Club is 1800thb and 1400thb to stay. Weekend price is more and towards the end of the year both are much more. The offer is valid for wd and we until the end of the year.

Grand Prix stand is next to the Merc stand. We also wandered through the BMW stand …didn’t recognise it at first …no oil on the floor ……..

It’s about a two hour drive from Kanchanaburi town. The course condition is really great and so are the greens. Unfortunately dual pricing 700thb for Thai and 1000 for none Thai. Nowhere did it say that until we went to pay. Anyway  good price so not a real problem. We stayed two days.

There were about 30 Koreans staying so we had to go off after them, so started playing about 8am. Play was quick, good job really as temperature soon got up to 41C.

Our room was quite large and could be described  as quite okay. Other than breakfast we had meals in a restaurant about 4kms away.

Their swimming pool has been closed since Covid, so not a lot else to do…golf course appeared empty in the afternoon ………probably best to visit when it’s not quite so hot ….

We drove up to Vajiralongkorn Dam Golf Course with the idea of staying there and playing …took one look at it …very very dry and decided no.

Off to Grand Prix GC for a couple of days ..

We are off to live in Khon Kaen soon - have you been to any of the golf places around here?  If anyone knows of a good stay and play golf course near KK (less than a day's drive), please let me know.

We have played at both Dancoon and Singha in KK - did so at both about a month ago. Dancoon has deteriorated a lot since we first played there pre-Covid, but Singha is still in good condition. I must say though that I did not like Singha much as a social course. It is far too 'technical' with a clear need for both local knowledge and distance control - and the greens were very small and very hard to read (the caddies were no help). Dancoon is a great layout and easy to play, but it needs some work and rain to bring it back to what it was - the greens are fine but the fairways are a little sparse here and there.  However, that was not a problem because we play social golf - preferred lies etc.  That makes any course condition on the day not such an issue.

In fact, it always amazes me that some social golfers here adhere so closely to professional rules when playing on a golf course that it not maintained up to that level of competition. We play social golf - mud on ball or in a hole, then pick it up and clean and place, same for a bad lies in a bunker - basically we play the same on the course as we do on the greens. Astounds me to see people playing from bad lies on a less than professional quality golf course with damaged fairways and bunker surrounds and unraked or badly raked bunkers etc. It makes it so much easier and better to play social golf the way we do - but I guess if they are playing for money as some do, then it makes some sense.

We did play a course in that area many many years ago but neither of us can  remember anything about it.

Usually, EGAT courses have accommodation but sometime it is a bit basic although the food is normally okay. Ubonrat Dam course might be worth a visit and try the accommodation in the villa.
