As Florida bans legal abortion, where will 84,000 women go?

Florida's impending six-week abortion ban, upheld by the state Supreme Court, is poised to create a seismic shift in abortion access, with repercussions felt far beyond its borders. Abortion advocacy groups are bracing for what they anticipate will be an imminent crisis.

The ruling, which allows the six-week ban to take effect on May 1 alongside the current 15-week ban, effectively seals off abortion access in the South, where neighboring states already enforce near-total bans or stringent restrictions. With approximately 84,000 abortions performed in Florida last year, including many for out-of-state residents, the looming ban leaves countless women in a precarious position.

The new law, one of the most restrictive in the nation, will essentially amount to a complete ban on abortions. Given that six weeks gestation often precedes pregnancy awareness for many women, coupled with the state's requirement for two in-person visits 24 hours apart, accessing abortion care will become exceedingly difficult.

Moreover, the ban prohibits doctors from prescribing abortion pills via telemedicine, mandating in-person dispensation by a physician. Exceptions for rape and incest are included but come with stringent documentation requirements, such as providing a police report, medical record, or court order.

Advocates warn that the law will result in clinic closures and force women to travel long distances across state lines, a significant barrier for low-income individuals. For instance, residents in southern Florida may need to travel up to 11 hours to reach the nearest clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina, which itself enforces strict abortion regulations.

Abortion fund organizations and providers like Planned Parenthood have been preparing for the state's anticipated ban for over a year. However, they assert that existing capacities elsewhere are insufficient to accommodate the expected surge in demand for care. The end of Roe v. Wade has already made abortion care more expensive, exacerbating the financial burden on individuals, particularly those from marginalized communities.

Democratic-led states with robust abortion protections have seen increased demand since Roe's demise, further straining available resources. Financial constraints pose a significant challenge for abortion funds, risking the possibility of having to turn away individuals seeking assistance.

While advocates remain hopeful for a ballot measure in November to legalize abortion in Florida up to the point of viability, residents will endure the six-week ban for several months before any potential change takes effect. The focus on political maneuvering surrounding the ballot measure has drawn criticism, with advocates emphasizing the urgent need to address the immediate suffering of those impacted by the stringent abortion ban.

As discussions continue about the political implications, it's crucial not to lose sight of the individuals bearing the brunt of these restrictive policies and the urgent need for accessible, equitable reproductive healthcare.

Too irresponsible to use birth control ... not much hope for them to understand & use the voting system.

15 weeks is till allowed, and if having one, really should be that time.   They have till Nov when 6 weeks comes into effect.  Maybe they can learn to be responsible by then, and not be a repeat murderer.

True. This is the standard all over Europe AFAIK, yet nobody screams about it.

It is a simple fact that, if you have sex, a pregnancy may result, even if you are using birth control. So you should be prepared for the results.

They will go either to another state or to a back street abortionist. Well done de Santis.

Well done citizens of FL, who elected the representatives, to put forth a law for them that they, the majority wanted.  DeSantis just didn't veto it, and agreed with them.  He was elected to represent his constituents.

That's how democracy works in a Constitutional Republic.

Goodness me, it's like contraception was never invented.

As it's women that bear the pregnancy, it's ultimately their responsibility to ensure pregnancy does not occur. What happened to woman power and strong women and all that? "No" works pretty well as a contraceptive if they can't buy a condom.

How bout those that were raped and become pregnant..... they are to blame because they did not insist on a condom to be used ?

See that , I didn’t know that!

Learn something new everyday.

Judging from the headline  it looks like

woman have no options!

Election year and the ruthless progressives , through their media ,will try all manner of deception to remain in power, that includes killing future children of Florida ,while in the womb.

A fetus grows into a child!

The progressives would have the State or Government use tax money for this madness , if left unchecked.

Sorry, but I differ on that. IMO taxpayer paying for contraception avoids paying larger later when the unwanted child commits crimes and has to be incarcerated at taxpayer expense for years.

Up to me free condom machines in every public toilet, and the pill free from any medical clinic after a free medical exam to see it was safe for the woman.

Just another hit piece on DeSantis, who's likely to be a 2028 contender.  Anything they can do to damage Ron or Florida is fair game.

Like that hit peace they did a few weeks ago on his Surgeon General for the measles epidemic of 10 cases that "swamped" Florida.  They're pretty quiet, though, about the 57 measles cases (and counting) in the migrant centers of Chicago.  Doesn't fit their narrative.  Blue mayor and Biden's border disaster.

I thought DeSantis was meant to be a 2024 contender?

He stepped up onto the national stage and got laughed off.

Let’s be clear, no federal funds are used.

Not content with that, illiberals wish to ban private funding too.

Poplation is shrinking in the western world, and the need to maintain a healthy lower class is obvious, so banishing abortion is the solution
