Thailand Urges Peaceful Resolution Amid Myawaddy Conflict

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai government has expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Myawaddy, urging Myanmar to ensure the conflict does not affect the sovereignty of both land and airspace and to maintain the safety of residents along the border. 

 

According to Department of Information Director-General and spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nikorndej Balankura, Thailand communicated its urgent desire for a swift resolution to the conflict and the restoration of peace in the region in a message to the Myanmar Embassy in Thailand on April 20.

 

In terms of military preparedness, Thailand has deployed personnel from the Ratchamanu Special Unit and the Naresuan Force along the border to closely monitor the situation. The Thai Air Force is also on alert to defend the airspace, especially following reports of increased military presence from Myanmar in the town of Kawkareik.

 

Thailand is currently engaging in major humanitarian efforts, coordinating with Mae Sot Hospital to prepare medical supplies and equipment for emergency situations. Assistance is being provided indiscriminately to all affected, whether they are Myanmar military personnel, resistance fighters, or civilians. The Thai government is collaborating with international organizations such as UNHCR to support those fleeing the conflict, providing essentials like blankets, bedding, and drinking water and organizing food supplies through local and international partners.

 

Thailand has also outlined conditions under which it will accept military personnel seeking refuge, requiring that they disarm and assume civilian status upon entry, assuring them of humanitarian care and a safe return only when their safety can be guaranteed.

Really then why let the Junta use Thailand to take out a truck full of cash, brought in over the bridge, aka money laundering, you have helped the conflict continue.

One of the more rediculous headlines often seen on this site. A peaceful resolution to a full blown civil war against a junta. The only resolution will be when the junta collapses which is seeming more and more likely although the junta is still powerful. Thailand, ASEAN and the world have a lot to answer for for turning a blind eye to a military junta that forcibly overthrew a democratically elected government. Not such a suprise from Thailand I guess which is run by the military. The CCP which has withdrawn it's support for the junta and now backs the Tripple Brotherhood Alliance must be rubbing their hands together if the junta falls to possibly move in. Who knows but Myanmar is a basket case.

Agree and I wonder when and if the Junta loses power how long before Thailand will... a; change sides or.. b; help the Junta to re-establish power again.

Versus the Kingdom of Thailand unable to reach a peace agreement with the Malay Muslim insurrection over the last 100 years. Thailand should have zero credibility in expressing "deep concern" over another nation's civil war. 

Thailand needs to mind its own House first.

The best peaceful solution would be for the Army to surrender, for the generals to resign, for them to give the nation back to the democratically elected folks, and for the generals to take their billions and going to exile, and leave the Burmese people alone forever.

Thailand is in a position to actually strong-arm the Myanmar military junta to settle its civil war sooner than later.

No doubt Myanmar workers earning wages in Thailand that they couldn't get in Myanmar helps boost the Myanmar economy, especially in terms of consumer spending. If Thailand closes its border with Myanmar to prevent its  economic gain from its workers going into Thailand, that might well collapse the Myanmar junta government.

But such approach might negatively impact the Thai economy as a price to sustainable democracy in Thailand. 

If one considers the new Thai government as a cut-out for the Thai military power, for PTP the price of power to oppose the Mynamar military junta might be unsustainable.
