Three anti-coup activists charged with wire-tapping

Public prosecutors yesterday charged three anti-coup activists with conspiracy to wire-tap and illegally releasing the information gathered.

The three defendants are Jakrapob Penkair, Natthawut Saikua and Chatuporn Promphan of the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship. Chatuporn is also a People Power party-list member of Parliament.

The trial starts in the Criminal Court on March 10. The three were each released on 300,000 baht bail.

The charges stem from an anti-coup rally at Sanam Luang on June 22. The three circulated a recorded telephone conversation involving Government House official Preeraphan Prempooti and judges Wirat Chinwinijkul and Pairote Navanut.

It is alleged that they intended to besmirch the reputation of Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulanonda. A police report subsequently determined the information had been obtained by wire-tapping.

Jakrapob did enough giving head to the mighty one at the demos to be in line for a minor ministry position from what I hear. Cant see this going far to be honest especially when the PPP will be in power. It really is how they interfere with the court cases that will at least in the short term dictate the stability of the PPP government, and the chances of demos against them. I would think they'll pick off a few minor cases first and then see how far they can push it although another arguement is that they will push right to the hilt to start with and create conflict before calling a snap election in which to grab a full majority. We will see.

Jakrapob is an arrogant and submissive prick with an ego problem just as big as Thaksin himself, he gave a nice demonstration of this at his last appearance at the Foreign Correspondent's Club.

After the FCCT meeting, which I missed a journo said to me that Jakrapob seemed to have a single issue obsession with an 85-year old man and couldnt actually discuss anything else. He thought Jakrapob was as you said arrogant, but also obsessive to the point of boring, shallow

and easily seen through. Interesting to hear how those who cover many of these kind of guys think about them not that I have much time for journos to be honest. Nor politcians for that matter;)

No doubt Jakrapob will enjoy prancing around in his new ministerial motor. One has to give it to Mr. Thaksin for allowing equal opportunities for advancement purely based on the level of obsequiosness to him. It certainly gives opportunity to not only talentless nobodies like Jakrapob and Nop "the suit" but also enables the return to preeminence of past failures such as Chalerm the role model for all fathers and Mak the knife.

Don't disagree with most of this. However as to Nop the Suit, the label is a perfectly acceptable bit of banter but I wonder whether you or many other Thai Visa member really knows much about Nop's background. As it happens quite by chance I became aware that a high level of the Thai establishment (not by any means Thaksin supporters) he is very highly regarded as a first class lawyer.I believe he is also an Oxbridge graduate. So I think its legit to criticise him for working for Thaksin if that's one's view but I don't think there's any reason to question his competence. And to label him a" talentless nobody' is I'm afraid plain silly

3 PTV Protest Leaders Seek Postponement of Court Cases

The three leaders of the PTV protest or the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship resort to their MP status to broker a postponement of the interrogation process in a wire-tapping case.

Three United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship leaders Jakrapob Penkair (PM's Office Minister), Jatuporn Prompan (PPP MP), and Natthawut Saikua (Deputy Government Spokesman) came to court to request a postponement of the interrogation process relating to a wire-tapping case.

The three claimed that as they are MPs and therefore need to attend the parliamentary meeting, they are asking for a rescheduling of interrogations accordingly.

The court postponed their interrogation to June 23rd at 1.30p.m. as the plaintiff did not object to the request of the defendants.

In this case, ten advocates, acting as plaintiffs, filed charges against the three for their role in disclosing conversation from phone taps.

The alleged wrongdoing happened at the UDD meeting on June 22nd, 2007 when the three aired a recorded telephone conversation between Government House adviser Peeraphan Premapooti, Wirat Chinwinitchakul and Pairoj Nawanut. The three were granted a 100,000 baht bail in the case.

Caught when trying to gather evidence of wrongdoing? How stupid of them ! Everybody at BV knows you don't need evidence to declare someone guilty !!

Ooops, sorry, these people are the people who were fighting against the Junta when the PAD were lying low, they are the democrats who don't belong to the "democrats". They may be excused for such a stupid mistake.

UPDATE...the slow wheels of justice in this case are at least still turning...

About the turmoil in front of the residence of Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda led by the Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship in July last year, Police Deputy Spokesman Surapol Tuanthong revealed that the police have sent the investigation documents to the Attorney-General's Office. The case is expected to be proposed to the court for further prosecution soon.

Remarkable how many of these riot leading criminal litigants ended up in the current government.... :o

Jatuporn is at it again... :o As if all the present government-controlled television and radio stations weren't enough, he wants to bring back PTV to have another one. Perhaps the above post about his criminal case advancing has him worried that there just aren't enough praises for his great work with the highly effective current government...

PTV Revived to Stage Cable War with ASTV

The People Power Party is attempting to bring back PTV channel to fight against ASTV news channel, claiming a full attack in the cable network war.

People Power Party MP[, criminal litigant,] and founder of PTV channel, Jatuporn Prompan is planning to revive the channel in hopes of providing facts and information that he says has been hidden by ASTV news channel.

He affirmed that PTV is ready to fight in a war between the two cable TV channels.

People's Television or PTV was founded by some former members of the Thai Rak Thai Party, led by Weera Musikkapong, Jakrapob Penkair, Nattawut Saikua, and Jatuporn Prompan.

The channel took an important role in the protest against the CNS and acted as a back-up for the Democratic Alliance against Dictatorship, which staged a rally *riot* against Privy Council President Prem Tinsulanonda in front of his house. *resulting in hundreds of injuries and the arrest of DUD's leaders*

As a result of the previous election, many PTV executives have been appointed as members of Parliament and ministers such as the former PM's Office Minister, Jakrapob Penkair, who recently faced a lese majeste charge for his speech at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand last year.

The PTV group ceased broadcast from March 30th onward.

MP to revive pro-government PTV

People Power Party (PPP) MP Jatuporn Promphan yesterday promised to revive the pro-government PTV station to counter ASTV, which is run by the People's Alliance for Democracy.

He said ASTV had ruined the democratic system by distorting the facts about the PPP-led administration. *the truth hurts* The public should get accurate information from PTV, he said.

PTV was founded by pro-Thaksin Shinawatra politicians after the military ousted Thaksin in the September 2006 coup. The station stopped broadcasting shortly after the PPP won last year's election.

Oh, right, one cannot ask about decisions...that would lead to an open and transparent process which might lead to understanding...and we cannot have that.

Have a feeling PTV will be as fair and balanced as Sean Hannity on his Ritalin-trips...but let them revive it. If they allow others to buy broadcasting rights to some other new tv channels...

Pro-government TV station to resume broadcasting

Channel returns to counter PAD output

Satellite-based PTV will return tomorrow to air pro-government programmes to counter the PAD attempt to depose PM Samak and his Cabinet. The return of the station, which publicly supported then-PM Thaksin when he faced street rallies leading to the military coup two years ago, will be announced today, according to one of its founders, Jatuporn Phromphan. Jatuporn, who is now an MP for the ruling PPP, says the founders have decided to relaunch the station to protect democracy, which they say has been undermined by the PAD demonstration. Another reason behind the PTV relaunch is that his group, most of whom are also leaders of the anti-coup United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship, could no longer sit idly by, listening to ''distorted'' information from the PAD, he said. "We'll counter all the PAD's slanted information about democracy," said Jatuporn. PTV programs would be transmitted via the MV5 channel of the ThaiCom satellite network. They decided not to use government facilities for the transmission to head off criticism. Other PTV backers are former PTV president Veera Musikapong, former PM's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair and current Deputy Government Spokesman Natthawut Saikua. "We're less patient than Thaksin. If the four of us had been defamed in the way Thaksin has been, we would have climbed on a stage at Sanam Luang to tell people how we have been bullied and humiliated over the past two years," Jatuporn said. Since the law does not allow him as a PPP MP to hold any stake in a media firm, he will host programs for PTV for free, he said.

Yeah I agree they shouldn't set the station up again, although I can understand the frustration that they must feel with the likes of ASTV's biased coverage. I'm also concerned that it might contravene rules of politicians running a media outlet (in spirit if not in letter). That's also the main reason IMO that Sondhi would rather battle politics via the PAD rather than through becoming an MP himself.

Posted (edited)

If they wish to counter anything coming out of the single satellite station ASTV, as mentioned they have control of multiple traditional stations as well as radio with a huge difference in the numbers of viewers and listeners. Comparatively speaking, they already run a huge propaganda machine... but are not satisfied until they stifle all dissent. The wide-spread level of protestation that occurred when ASTV was threatened recently to be taken off the air clearly points out that people want to hear a different perspective than that of what comes out of the government's mouth.

Deputy Spokesman says PTV show to be undeniably legal

Deputy Spokesman of the Prime Minister's Office Nuttawut Saikua commented on a planned PTV television show to feature several government figures, saying that he will only be a guest on the show and is anticipating any incentives other than to a conduct a service for the public.

He asked that the Democrat Party and the People's Alliance for Democracy desist from threatening that the event will be illegal, confirming the legality of the show which will only serve to update citizens on government work.

People Power Party MP Jatuporn Phrompan elaborated on the legality of the show by affirming that it would reap no profits while also expressing that he believes the PAD's political beliefs are becoming increasingly disconcerting.

ThaiNews transliteration of his name works better for the nut.

btw, the other rioting thugs co-leader mentioned in the article and coincidentally PTV co-founder and coincidentally also in the current government is Jatuporn.... who can be represented by yelling at university students for refusing to take his TRT bribes during the time he was... ironically... Deputy Government Spokesman... like Nut is now with the PPP.

Former PM's Office Minister to join PTV resurrection

Board Chairman of the PTV Station Company Veera Musikpong, joined by former Prime Minister's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkae and Deputy Spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office Nuttawut Saikua as well as People Power Party MP Jatuporn Phrompun spoke during a press conference saying that the resurrection of PTV would be done by renting time from MVTV 5.

The rented time would be used to conduct news type shows. Veera said that he did not believe the event would incite conflict amongst the public.

Jakrapob said that the resurrection of the channel would be indirect response to the PAD to not allow their ideals to flood the public psyche. He said that PTV would board 5 hours a day in 3 different time slots.

Yes, I can explain. Because all TV members are allowed to express their views providing they stay within the rules.

Just because, in your opinion, you believe Sunrises posts lack significance, meaning, or point does not break these rules and doesn't mean every one agrees with you.

No doubt there are posters that think some of your posts are inane.

Live and let live.
