You don't find something such as the above slightly disturbing?

It reeks of the histories of certain nearby Asian countries.

There is nothing comparable in any developed Western nation and where there are issues over free speech, there is at least enough of an opposition or pressure group to provide some checks. Here you have a case of laws being used to tread on opposition and no one dare to stand up and push for more freedom because of the nature of the law.

Tread on opposition? Opposition to what? What is so difficult to comply with lese majeste laws? Millions and millions do so every day without any difficulty whatsoever and don't feel the slightest disturbance in their lives.

Politcally that is salient point. The ordinary people of Thailand love and respect the insitution. If the red shirts become an organization whose Bangkok based leaders and members keep getting hauled up in front of judges for insulting the institution and the red shirts are seen constantly demonstrating outside these courts to release people charged with this crime, then real wedge will be formed between the Bangkok based leaders and leftists and the provincial Thaksin supporters who still revere the institution. And the more the welathy Bangkok based leadership try to use the charges to raise politcs the worse the divison will become.

Expedience and lack of dual nationality immediately spring to mind.

Strange to see how some people condone laws without thinking about intrinsic human rights.

But of course as there is no freedom of speech we should probably not continue this discussion.

With so many not willing to stand up for rights and just toe the line no wonder the world is in such a mess.

To the Thai people, this subject must not be discussed in any form. Please stop the discussion here. All this must be censered, not only in Thailand, but all over the world.

Also I hope Jonathan Head, Giles Ungkaporn and Jakrapob Penkair all gets the maximum 15 years sentenses for insulting the king. Their cases must also not be reported. They are not even worth a trial. Just arrest them and put them in jail straight away.

True. The trend towards suppressing press freedom in Thailand and using LM to harass your political enemies reached its apex under Thaksin, who used these tactics consistently. Now the former opposition, it can be argued, is using the latter tactic, but at least they aren't--so far--trying to increase executive power while at the same time diminishing that of the fifth column. Thailand's lowest press freedom ratings since the 70s evolved during Thaksin's terms of office. The number of LM cases also multiplied beyond anything seen before in this regnum. By comparison what we have seen so far under the Demos is similar in kind but not yet degree.

As a result of the previous election, many PTV executives have been appointed as members of Parliament and ministers such as the former PM's Office Minister, Jakrapob Penkair, who recently faced a lese majeste charge for his speech at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand last year.

The PTV group ceased broadcast from March 30th onward.

No one is in jail.

Edit: not sure about Da Torpedo current status, though.

Da Torpedo is in jail awaiting trial.

Another women has just been convicted to 12 years imprisonment, sentence reduced to 6 years after confessing.

Harry Nicolaides has been in jail for more than 6 months already, repeated requests for bail have been refused by the court.

Facts...

Extremely poor reporting from the Nation. A while ago they reported that Thaksin's assets had been siezed in the UK, also BS.

The internet shows just how bad the two English language dailies are. I'm wondering how long it will be before one of them folds.

Nattawut and Jatuporn and Veera and Jakrapob

Questions raised over TV hosts' assets

Senator Ruangkrai Leekijwattana voiced suspicion yesterday over where the three hosts of "The Truth of Today" program got millions of baht to buy shares in a private company.

Ruangkrai questioned how Government Spokesman Nattawut Saikua, People Power Party MP Jatuporn Prompan, and Veera Musikapong had the money to buy shares in Puan Pong Nong Pi Co Ltd.

He said an official document listing the company shareholders dated April 2007 showed that Nattawut held 200,000 shares worth 20 Million Baht, Jatuporn held 100,000 shares worth 10 Million Baht, and Veera held 100,000 shares worth 10 Million Baht in the company.

He asked where the three got the money to own these shares.

The Senator also said that from June to October before the Dec 23 general election, Nattawut, Jatuporn, and Jakrapob sold 100,000 shares each or 10 Million Baht each. He asked if the money was used for the election campaign and if they had reported that to the Election Commission in how much they spent on their campaigns. Election laws ban candidates from spending more than 1.5 Million Baht each on their campaign.

The assets declaration of Jatuporn submitted to the National Counter Corruption Commission on January 22 showed he had 5.3 Million Baht in assets after debts were accounted for.

more problems for Jatuporn...

A legal offence to criticise the prime minister in the royal audience: Democrat

Red-shirt leader Jatuporn Prompan was risking to commit a legal offence by criticising the picture depicting Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva in the royal audience, Democrat MP Sirichoke Sopha said on Wednesday.

Jatuporn claimed that Abhisit acted disrespectfully by sitting on a chair while making a report to His Majesty the King.

Sirichoke countered that Jatuporn should withold his comments since he was in fact criticising the Royal Palace.

At the beginning of the royal audience, Abhisit prostrated himself to pay respect to His Majesty before being granted royal permission to sit on a chair arranged by the Royal Palace, he said.

while Jakrapob's date is set for his continued problems...

OAG schedules Jakrapob's lese majeste case for March 5

The Office of the Attorney General has scheduled a ruling on the lese majeste case of Jakrapob Penkae for March 5th at 10 AM in response to widespread interest in the case.

Director of the Criminal Division of the Office of the Attorney-General Kayasit Pisawongprakan stated that, after reviewing case files of the lese majeste claim against the United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) core leader Jakrapob Penkae submitted by investigative officers, the office has scheduled their verdict hearing for March 5th.

The office will also establish a committee of unbiased language experts to review all evidence and a statement submitted by Jakrapob in his defense.

Mr. Kayasit admitted that the matter is very sensitive and is receiving much public attention; therefore, it needs extreme thoroughness.

The reds Bangkok based ideologues and leftists ideas not exactly in line with the majority in Thailand that they have tried hard to keep away from rural areas are becoming better known in upcountry areas now. That reputation has until now been mainly confined to urban areas. These cases are not going to make their cause any easier.

It'll be a maximum sentence of 25 years if recent Dem proposals come into effect. At this rate the idea floated during the Junta's regime of extending LM to protect the Privy Council might be raised again. Given that the new Deputy PM has just advocated giving the Council increased powers over selecting the "Independent Organizations" (against the spirit of Section 14 of the 2007 Constitution IMO), and the fact that criticising the judiciary or their decisions can now get you thrown inside for Contempt of Court, it doesn't take a rocket (or political) scientist to see where we're heading as far as transparency and accountability in politics is concerned.

As far as the PAD go, I thought one of their proclamations was to put an end to the use of LM as a political tool. It was one of the few things I agreed with them on (although their Royalist rhetoric to an extent seemed to go against this point). If the Dem's other new LM proposal is enacted (that a charge won't have to go to a police investigation first, but can go straight to "Contempt of Court-protected" court), then I find it difficult to see how this is good for Thailand, its people or - more importantly given the nature of the law - the monarchy itself.

Bizarre indeed, a practice that has been around a long time and was accelerated under the Thaksin regime. It looks like the Demos are getting their licks in now.

Haven't you heard? It's the latest group to be grouped in with PAD.... the Police. :o

Maybe something to do with them not arresting PAD for the numerous crimes that they commited along with taking over the airport. :D

and the 500 injured, maimed, and killed PAD on Oct. 7th was just an in-group squabble?

Apart from the fact he ahs never ever been able to control his mouth, why did the odious Jatuporn make such a silly claim as you cant sit in a chair anyway. How many other PMs have been pictured so? And motor mouth should have known this.

The problem for the Bangkok based red ideologues and Bangkok based dandy red leftists (who are different from the up country Thaksin liking reds) is that the stories of what some of their beliefs are, are now starting to go around in the rural areas where they tried to keep this quiet previously, so every little controversy on this matter hurts them more and more with those they are or maybe increasingly were allied with or looked to for support. This could help to explain Jatuporn's idiotic comment in terms of trying to show his respect. What the Democrat responded with could just wind Jatuporn up even more and in political terms was a reply to Jatuporn's gambit.

this thread is about anti coup leaders from 2006.

it is not a subject about the Thai monarchy, nor PAD. the former of these two is a subject that is not to be discussed AT ALL. period.

please keep that in mind.
