One-Third of the World Still Criminalizes Same-Sex Acts

Despite some progress in LGBTQ rights, a significant portion of the world continues to criminalize consensual same-sex acts, according to a report by the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA). Released on Thursday, the report details ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ community globally, with one-third of United Nations member states still enforcing laws against same-sex relationships.

Out of the 193 UN member states, 62 maintain legal penalties for consensual same-sex relations. More alarmingly, the death penalty is a potential punishment in about a dozen countries. The ILGA report, which covers the period from January 2023 to April 2024, also highlights that approximately one-third of countries impose legal barriers against organizations advocating for LGBTQ rights. These barriers lead to censorship, arrests, and prosecutions for the so-called "promotion" of homosexuality, a trend ILGA director Julia Ehrt finds extremely concerning.

Uganda, for example, has recently enacted one of the world's most severe anti-gay laws. This legislation imposes life imprisonment for consensual same-sex acts and introduces the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality." Additionally, countries like Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uganda have implemented new legal provisions targeting the promotion of homosexuality. Russia has gone further by labeling the "international LGBT movement" as extremist.

The situation for LGBTQ individuals in many regions is dire, with public discussions about LGBTQ lives becoming increasingly restricted. "Even talking about our lives in public is becoming increasingly difficult in a growing number of states," said Ehrt, reflecting the broader challenges of visibility and advocacy.

The ILGA report arrives amidst escalating violence and harassment against LGBTQ people in Europe. According to a May survey by the European Union's rights agency, such incidents have reached unprecedented levels in recent years.

Despite these challenges, the report also highlights some positive developments. Over the past 16 months, four additional UN member states have legalized same-sex marriage, raising the total to 35 countries, including Taiwan. Bolivia and Latvia have both legalized civil unions, with several prefectures in Japan following suit.

Furthermore, legal recognition of self-identified gender on official documents has expanded. Germany, Ecuador, Spain, Finland, and New Zealand have introduced policies allowing individuals to update their gender markers, bringing the total number of such countries to 17.

Nonetheless, ILGA underscores that "relentless opposition is marring the progress made in equal rights for LGBTI people" worldwide. The struggle for LGBTQ rights continues to face significant resistance, highlighting the urgent need for continued advocacy and support for LGBTQ communities globally.

Lock then up in male prisons? Should do the trick.

With these numbers, I'm surprised it's only 1/3, when half+ of the religious folks are against the alphabet folks ... :coffee1:

Interesting that they avoided mentioning any Muslim countries.

I wonder why...

I wasn't aware that there was a unanimous opinion among Christians and Musllims. Here's some polling numbers from the United  States:

It looks like, at least among Americans, Muslims are more tolerant on the issue than are evangelical Protestants, Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses and Black Protestants.

You seem quite upset about what consenting adults get up to in the privacy of their own homes. Why does it bother you so much?

I think it's because it's not a Muslim only phenomena. In fact, it makes sense to highlight this fact. Most people are aware of the ultra conservative views of some Muslim countries, but sadly this backward thinking is not restricted to them. This article shows that bigotry exists on a wider plain than just the Islamic world.

Malaysia is also part of the UN but they have a 2 track legal system, with Islamic laws running alongside Civil Laws, they should be on that list to.

Gays for Palestine.

Oh hang on a minute.

We all know the countries that ban homosexuality.Ironically it is those same countries that are quite partial to a bit of brown love.

I tend to think that nothing much good comes out of endlessly meddling in other sovereign nations affairs.....but the Neo-colonists can't help in can they? We have same sex marriage so you have to have it to? We no longer execute gays like we did 100 years ago so you have to stop it to. Well you Neo-colonists did the world a =huge disservice plundering the un developed world so why don't you bugger off?

Just highlights my believe that most religious folks are a bit hypocritical, in so many ways.   Especially Catholics.

Big difference from what is preached to what is practiced ... IMHO

Not that I'm deep into their believe, but some of headlines and their actions, lifestyles certainly differ.

Not Muslim only. But the hatred for sexual minorities in Muslim countries is nearly universal.  The only countries where being gay is a death penalty offense are Muslim.

If you look closely, the only areas of Uganda with the death penalty are the...wait for it.... Muslim provinces.

I am waiting for the world to sanction the majority of countries where these despicable laws are promulgated. Also places where gender apartheid is practiced. But I wont hold my breath.

I'd only ever entered through the front door when i first came to Thai but having tried (numerously) i think those boys are onto something here.

i am a gay guy that supports Palestinians and thir rights, so divided some of my land and let them in.sounds crazy right? They have been the best, humblest, down to earth people we have ever met. The only time we have ever had problems was a simple cultural dispute. One night they raped my wife and killed my baby children in an oven, cut off my wife's breast @s they raped her, took my kids hostage and uploaded it to the internet. Other than that everything is fine.
