Japanese automaker Toyota is weighing plans to expand its manufacturing footprint in Cambodia to include electric and hybrid vehicles, in line with the Kingdom’s clean‑energy ambitions. The prospect was raised during a meeting in Phnom Penh between Mines and Energy Minister Keo Rottanak and Toyota Cambodia President Kensuke Tsuchiya. Discussions centred on Toyota’s long‑term role in supporting Cambodia’s transition to sustainable mobility. Toyota already operates an assembly plant in the Royal Group Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone, producing models such as the Fortuner and Hilux since 2024. The company has invested nearly $100 million and employs more than 1,100 workers, making it a strategic partner for the Royal Government. Cambodia has registered over 15,000 electric vehicles since 2021, and the government’s National Policy on EV Development (2024‑2030) aims to raise that figure to 770,000 by 2030. Officials say Toyota’s potential move into EV and hybrid production would accelerate this target while deepening local supply chains. A natural backdrop for clean energyBeyond its industrial ambitions, Cambodia is positioning itself as a hub for sustainable development. The country’s natural environment—ranging from the Cardamom Mountains and Virachey National Park to the Tonle Sap Lake and Mekong wetlands—has already earned it recognition as Southeast Asia’s top ecotourism destination. These landscapes, rich in biodiversity, underscore the government’s push to align industrial growth with environmental conservation. By linking automotive expansion to clean energy goals, officials hope to show that Cambodia’s development can balance modern industry with protection of its forests, rivers and wildlife. Strategic partnershipMinister Rottanak described Toyota as a “partner the Royal Government supports and encourages to continue expanding,” noting the company’s role in job creation and technology transfer.
