Accident Car Race Ends in 10-Vehicle Crash on Expressway
Pictures courtesy of Matichon. A high-speed street racing incident, resulted in a ten-vehicle crash on the Udon Ratthaya Expressway in the early hours of 16 August, leaving the expressway blocked with cars and debris. The crash occurred at around 01:30 on 16 August, on the outbound lanes above Muang Thong Thani, heading towards Bang Pa-in in Ban Mai subdistrict, Pak Kret district. Police Lieutenant Thapanapong Phuengmee of Pak Kret Traffic Police Station reported that approximately ten modified and high-end cars were involved, all sustaining damage. The wreckage blocked both lanes, leaving other vehicles unable to pass, with oil spills also covering the road surface. Emergency services and expressway rescue units were called in to clear the scene. Multiple tow trucks removed the damaged vehicles and crews cleaned up the oil spill, restoring traffic after more than three hours. A 29-year-old BMW driver, Achipol, recounted the moments: “I had picked up my girlfriend to take her home near Thammasat Rangsit. While driving in the right lane, a white car collided with my rear, causing my car to spin. Another vehicle hit us immediately after. The first car, which I believe was a Honda City, fled the scene. My girlfriend suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital.” Footage from a dashcam shows three white cars, which are believed to have been racing, speeding around a bend at Muang Thong, where the road narrows from three lanes to two. The blue BMW attempted to avoid the speeding vehicles but was hit from behind, causing it to spin, followed by several other cars colliding in quick succession. Police have documented the scene, collected dashcam footage, and will interview all drivers involved to determine the cause. CCTV from the expressway will also be reviewed.
