The Thai Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has urgently recalled 15 types of children's syrup from store shelves. Tests revealed these products contain ethylene glycol levels exceeding the permitted safety limits. This discovery has prompted immediate action to protect public health.

TFDA Secretary-General Dr. Narong Aphikulvanich shared that the Medical Sciences Department recently tested samples from various syrups, unearthing unsafe ethylene glycol concentrations. Ethylene glycol, an organic compound typically used in antifreeze and polyester manufacturing, is tasteless, odourless, and dangerously toxic in high amounts.

The TFDA has instructed manufacturers to immediately recall all affected 31 production lots. The syrups in question include widely used brands like Carbosol, Startec, Parastar, Fatec, Cetaphen, Co-trimoxazole, Kressbuten, Domperstar, Kresstrim, Kresscolet, Kresstec, Kressbrooxol, Startifen, and Domperkress syrups.

Parents are urged to be vigilant and monitor their children for symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or stomach discomfort if they have consumed any of these syrups. Dr. Narong emphasized the importance of seeking medical advice without delay should any adverse reactions occur.

To aid concerned parents and caregivers, the TFDA has established dedicated contact points. People can reach out via the TFDA hotline at 1556 (press 3), call 0-2590-7405, or connect through the FDAThai Facebook page for more information.

The swift recall underscores the diligence of the TFDA in ensuring the safety of medicinal products for children in the country. While the recall is a precautionary measure, it highlights the need for rigorous quality control in pharmaceutical manufacturing to prevent such incidents.

This development serves as a reminder for parents to remain informed and cautious about the medications they administer to their children, ensuring their safety and well-being.

What is ethylene glycol used for?
Ethylene glycol is a useful industrial compound found in many consumer products. Examples include antifreeze, hydraulic brake fluids, some stamp pad inks, ballpoint pens, solvents, paints, plastics, films, and cosmetics.

How? is it possible this winds up in something they give children ?

it seems it COULD be a remedy for all the "BRAKE FAILURE"

How in the world did the contamination affect so many brands? One manufacturer?
