What movies and tv series with LGBTQ content are you currently watching?

So the idea here is to have a Gay Forum version of the more general topic on the forum.

Why?

There is so much LGBTQ content to choose from, new and old, that I think it justifies a dedicated topic.

To whet the appetite, this (and other!) youtube channels always gives current updates of new and upcoming LGBTQ stuff.

You may also wish to suggest youtube short films.

Of course you are welcome to share your "reviews" of the content you are watching as well.

I'm currently watching Eric tv series starring Benedict Cumberbatch, a British show set in NYC.

It's not a gay tv series per se, but a main character is a closeted (black) police detective.

I think it's one of the best portrayals of the emotional distress caused by being in the closet that I've seen in a very long time.

The series overall (I'm half way through) is kind of depressing as it deals with dark themes but it's got a refreshing realism about New York City in the past.

People looking for mindless light entertainment should skip it.

Fantasmas

Well, also set in NYC, I just started this one and I'll continue with it but not ready to review it, so here you go. I love the part about getting a doctor's note excusing from gym class for life!

TV Review: Fantasmas ★★★★ – The Queer Review

In the delectably queer (in every sense of the word) new HBO comedy series  Fantasmas, creator-writer-director-star Julio Torres (Los Espooskys, Problemista) plays a thirty-something creative named Julio Torres. He lives in a heightened, only-ever-so-slightly surreal version of New York City with his trusty robot assistant Bibo (voiced by Joe Rumrill), an aspiring actor eyeing human roles.

An Andalusian Bitch

Una perra andaluza

Here's an oddball one.

A low budget (zero budget more like) tv series set in Sevilla Spain.

An experimental story telling style.

Lots of queer characters and story lines.

Friend groups of millennials.

I tried one episode and it was a struggle to get through as the style was so weird and the subtitles were very messed up but there is lots of eye candy and maybe something to learn about another culture or maybe not.

To say that this one isn't for everyone would be a great understatement.

Of An Age

2022 movie

A very melancholy gay love story set in a Bogan area of Australia with tones of Serbia and Argentina.

Especially relatable if you've had a one night stand that rocked your world. Timing good or bad is everything. Say no more.

I can't really highly recommend Sebastian 2024 a Finnish produced movie set in London. However it held my interest well enough to watch it. It's about the pressures on a young writer to succeed early (25 seen as too old to be a wunderkind) so his plan is to write a novel about sex work by stealthily acting as a sex worker himself.  There are graphic scenes of intergenerational sex to be experienced, the undeniable beauty of the main character, and the completely predictable complications of his secret hustler world mixing with his public persona. But nothing earth shattering that hasn't been done before  If I had to grade it: C+.

A shout out to readers of this topic.

I'm wondering why there haven't been any contributors other than me to this topic.

Do you watch any LGBTQ video content?

If you do, why not share it with others here?

Do you object to this being in a separate category here in the gay forum?

If that was the case, we would be seeing lots of sharing of LGBTQ video content in the similar thread on the general forum and we don't.

Sometimes you just want to indulge in a short entertainment.

Instead of movie or binging a mini series, a short film, or two or three.

Youtube is a great source for LGBTQ content short films.

The quality varies of course.

If it's crap you can just switch it off.

But for short films, it doesn't stop at youtube.

Not everything is on youtube. Some of the best ones aren't on youtube.

So where to go?

Shhh: gay-torrents

Also compilations of festival stuff.

An example of a fairly decent one:

Down Low 2023 movie

I assume y'all know what down low means.

Anyway, this is an average movie maybe good for when you're seeking something that isn't intellectually taxing. I guess it's a comedy but I doubt you'll be laughing much. There is a deep message about embracing life full throttle but in a vehicle this superficial, it doesn't really register.

Variety Peter Debruge

Hopelessly shallow Down Low is still light-years ahead of mainstream movies (including last year’s “Bros”) as debuting feature director Rightor Doyle delivers what an entire contingent of queer audiences have been asking for all their lives: namely, a comedy that’s as raunchy and inappropriate as the jokes they make among themselves.

No one will miss us

Set in 1990s Mexico city series about a student mafia gang selling homework assignments. Well done and enjoyable including a major story line with gay characters. You will love the not gay Memo.

Ganymede (movie)

A reasonably fun watch but nowhere near a must see. A mix of elements -- horror, coming out v. closet, young love story, religiously based homophobia, barbaric conversion therapy etc. The more novel part is adding the horror.  You could do worse and you probably will.

What to watch: 'American Murder' revisits infamous Laci Peterson case (mercurynews.com)

“Ganymede”: The supernatural part proves to be the weakest link in directors Colby Holt and Sam Probst’s gay-themed thriller set in the South, and that’s not a dealbreaker given the “horror” part is intended to be simmering on the backburner. Where “Ganymede” (the title refers to a hunky Greek mythological character) proves most effective is when focused on high school wrestler Lee’s (Jordan Doww) reconciling an attraction to out student Kyle (Pablo Castelblanco) with his rabidly homophobic parents’ (Joe Chrest and Robyn Lively) insistence he leads  a “virtuous” lifestyle. A bigger budget would have helped smooth out a few rough edges but “Ganymede” is a diamond-in-the-rough gem with a committed performance from Doww and a well-constructed screenplay from Holt that addresses how outside forces can create imaginary monsters that  then could do us harm if we don’t fight them off. Details: 2½ stars;l available to rent now.
