Trump Pushes New GOP Platform Softening Positions on Abortion and Same-Sex Marriage

In a move spearheaded by former President Donald Trump and his allies, the Republican Party is set to abandon its longstanding push for a federal abortion ban and adopt a softer stance on same-sex marriage. This shift is reflected in a new draft policy platform passed on Monday morning, ahead of next week’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The draft platform still awaits approval from the full Republican National Committee.

The decision follows a concerted effort by the Trump campaign to exclude individuals deemed too socially conservative from the platform committee, fearing they would push for unpopular measures such as a federal abortion ban. A member of the platform committee, who requested anonymity, told NBC News, "The reality of the situation is, this platform reflects modern-day realities. This is a position that leaves it up to the states, which is the position of the Republican Party."

Contentious debates over abortion and same-sex marriage dominated the lead-up to the GOP’s policy platform revision, which typically occurs every four years alongside presidential elections. For the first time in recent memory, this year’s platform meeting was held behind closed doors, without media or public access. Social conservatives pushed to maintain the platform’s previous language supporting an abortion ban and opposing same-sex marriage, but these efforts were unsuccessful due to evolving political landscapes.

Trump has publicly stated that abortion should remain a state policy issue, especially following the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. His administration also expressed support for same-sex marriage. Despite this, Chad Connelly, a former chair of the South Carolina GOP, expressed disappointment over the platform changes. "It is fair to say that over 1,000 pastors have emailed, texted, and called me about their disappointment over where they saw the platform going," Connelly said. "The words I am hearing are shocked, betrayed, trampled, depressed, deflated."

Top Trump advisers Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles stated that the platform represents Trump’s vision for the Republican Party as it heads into the 2024 election cycle. "President Trump’s 2024 Republican Party platform articulates his vision to Make America Great Again in a way that is concise and digestible to every voter," they said in a statement.

However, the Biden campaign accused the GOP of hiding Trump’s true policy goals. "Every voter should Google Project 2025 if they want to know Donald Trump’s true agenda for America," Biden campaign spokesperson James Singer said. "What was put out today was not a platform, it was a cheap, in-all-caps admission Trump and his campaign want to hide from his dangerous Project 2025 agenda to make Trump a dictator on day one, destroy our system of checks and balances, cut Social Security, ban abortion and worse."

Trump distanced himself from Project 2025, a 922-page roadmap of policies for a potential second Trump administration, which has drawn criticism. "I know nothing about Project 2025," Trump wrote on social media. "I have no idea who is behind it. I disagree with some of the things they’re saying and some of the things they’re saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal. Anything they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them."

The current GOP policy platform, unchanged since 2016, supports a “human life amendment” to the U.S. Constitution. The proposed changes suggest that the 14th Amendment inherently protects life at conception, allowing states to pass laws protecting those rights. This represents a significant shift for the Republican Party, which has been divided on how to address abortion post-Roe v. Wade.

John Stemberger, president of Liberty Counsel Action, criticized the new language on abortion and life-related issues as "very weak and much less effective in articulating a sound policy agenda." However, he praised new sections that protect parental rights in education and oppose “gender indoctrination of our children.”

Regarding same-sex marriage, the proposed platform removes language defining marriage as "between one man and one woman." Instead, it promotes a "culture that values the Sanctity of Marriage, the blessing of childhood, the foundational role of family, and supports working parents." This marks a significant departure from previous GOP platforms.

The new draft platform, which spans only 16 pages compared to the previous 60-page document, includes additional policies such as initiating the “largest deportation program in American History,” opposing “foreign Christian-hating Communists, Marxists, and Socialists,” and barring men from women’s sports. It also pledges to "hold accountable" those who misuse government power for political prosecutions.

This streamlined platform reflects Trump’s effort to make the party’s policy positions more accessible to voters. "For decades, Republicans have published textbook-long platforms that are scrutinized and intentionally misrepresented by our political opponents," Wiles and LaCivita wrote in a memo. "The mainstream media uses their bully pulpit to perpetuate lies and misrepresentation, and the voters are often left believing we stand for something different than we actually do."

Some party officials view the shorter platform as a positive change. "It’s what a platform should be, in my opinion," said one official. "What DJT is running on, but not hundreds of pages of dribble." The proposed platform now awaits final approval from the full Republican National Committee, setting the stage for the party’s direction in the 2024 election.

Low unemployment, but far more part time jobs. They are increasing at a rate that exceeds full time jobs being lost. Now, about the inflation, the surge in housing costs, the debacle at the border, the $200 billion p1ssed away in Ukraine...

Record unemployment is simply  not true. the newest numbers came out lately and unemployment is at 4.1% the highest in two years.

Trump does not really have an agenda, other than absolute power and continuing to deceive his supporters. So, he will switch positions, lie, cheat, or obfuscate, to win. Believe him at your own peril. His relationship with truth and reality has always been rather tenuous, at best.

So how does Joe exploit that? Kirby has been saying he is sharp today. Give us some hope. What is the path?  The dems would never reverse course right? Nit when it is politically expedient. You sound like a child.

"Your democracy" isn't under threat. Even if the US WAS a democracy, which it isn't.    I mean seriously, what do you think that Trump can de exactly to hurt the Republic? He already had 4 years in office, did nothing to alter the Constitution, and left office for Biden to be inaugurated. Where is the threat?
