This thread should be held up as a perfect example of the monotonous, boring, and extremely predictable negativity from all the usual suspects. I think it would be helpful if AN just autopopulated the first few replies at the end of the article. "Floods, brown envelopes, Bangkok will be underwater, Chinese companies / Chinese servants, submarines". It would save you lot a lot of bother, although I realise it it would severely impact your quality of life.

But maybe you can answer this - how many times has the MRT flooded in the 20 years it has been running? How many times has the underground section of the ARL flooded in the 14 years it has been running? How many times have all the underground tunnels for electricity and communications flooded?

When I first came here, it was all pretty predictable. Nights out, bars, always somewhere busy. That was the routine. These days it’s different. Quieter, less going out. I still drop in now and then, but it’s not the center of things anymore. The scene itself feels different too.Fewer girls around, or just moved online? Bangkok is a huge city. those others are good sized, not towns but cities. People have many reasons to live in cities, as many as those who live in the country. Entertainment and restaurants close to work and apartments being two. Many love huge cities, as can be seen in all major cities worldwide. I have relatives that were born in Brooklyn and rarely left except to visit relatives. Millions do and also rarely leave except for vacations or business. There are cultures and charm in major cities although I prefer the country outside them. Kanchanaburi is isolated , being over an hour away from Bangkok, out in the country.
