to those of you who speak thai fluently, accent n all..

 

whenever you go out, say for a meal or a beer or are in a tourist ghetto - do you hide the fact that you can speak Thai or do you just come right out with it?

 

I am curious how AN members approach this topic as I myself have had many negative interactions with locals once they are aware that I can speak the lingo.

I do not speak Thai in public, rarely in private or at work.

 

I do however speak Thai back to the person(s) if they are saying something nasty or uncalled for.

Plus it is great to listen in conversations, great way to guage the real character of a thai person............... some are damn nasty.

I agree with most, if I am with my wife, a Thai, I usually just keep quiet and listen.  She knows I understand and could speak but says just act like you don't speak.  If I am by myself I usually chat with them and they become much more friendly while chatting about everything.

Not fluent at all, but not bad. Depends where one is; if in highly touristed area or on a plane, would go with the flow but wouldn't purposely hide it. Was recently on a flight and stewardess didn't get request in English, so was just easier in Thai and it was appreciated. Any negative reaction from speaking Thai is typically from the bar girl fraternity because you might 'know too mutt'. 🙄
