Man Kills Wife in Jealous Rage in Front of 13-Year-Old Daughter in Ang Thong
In a shocking incident in Ang Thong, a 52-year-old man has been arrested for fatally assaulting his wife in front of their 13- year-old daughter after a violent argument. The man, identified as Ning, admitted to killing his 53-year-old wife, Samniang, following years of marital strife and jealousy. Police from Ang Thong Police Station responded to a call on October 20, reporting the murder in Moo 4, Talad Kluad Subdistrict. Upon arriving at the scene, they found Samniang's body at the foot of the bed, with severe head injuries consistent with being struck by a blunt object. Bloodstains were scattered across the bedroom floor. Authorities immediately contacted forensic experts from Ang Thong Hospital to examine the body. Ning, the victim's husband, was taken into custody along with the weapon, a machete, used in the attack. Neighbours reported that the couple frequently argued, often escalating to physical violence. The previous night, loud shouting and sounds of a struggle were heard, but the house fell silent later in the night. It was only in the morning that the neighbours discovered Samniang had been killed. The motive for the crime appears to be jealousy. Ning believed his wife was having an affair with a neighbour, identified only as "N." The couple had a history of frequent fights, largely due to Ning's suspicions. Ning had even forced his wife to swear at three different temples that she would end her alleged relationship with the neighbour, but his distrust persisted. Ning confessed to the crime, stating that he had been struggling with his jealousy and often resorted to methamphetamine to cope with the stress. On the night, they had another heated argument. In a fit of rage, Ning struck his wife with the blunt side of the machete, causing her to hit her head on a concrete water tank outside the house. Ning then carried her inside and left her on the bed, where she moaned in pain throughout the night. He took their daughter to sleep at his mother's house next door. When he returned in the morning, Samniang had died. Ning is now in police custody and faces charges of assault leading to death. His 76-year-old mother, Sunoon, who lives next door, revealed that the couple's arguments were so frequent that she had moved to stay with another son in a nearby district. A public forum, hosted by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) and the Working Group on Welfare Policy for Young Children, was convened on Friday to spotlight road safety for children in Thailand. The event highlighted the urgent need to address road safety concerns, particularly for children who rely on public transport for school commutes, making them notably vulnerable. Associate Professor Sunee Chairoj, leader of the comprehensive welfare policy initiative, cited a 2022 Rangsit University study uncovering worrying trends: among Thailand's 4.3 million young children, around two million use public transport regularly, exposing them to road threats like driver negligence, poorly maintained vehicles, and overall lack of rule enforcement. In response, the group advocates for enhanced policies, regulations, and stricter safety standards. A key proposal from the forum is the introduction of the children's book "Drive Safely to the Beach" in schools, aiming to bolster road-safety skills among young Thais. This initiative is supported by alarming statistics from ThaiHealth's Office of Child, Youth, and Family Health Promotion. In 2023, the Ministry of Public Health reported 17,498 road accident deaths, with children and youth making up a distressing segment—approximately 10 fatalities each day, revealing that one in five road deaths affects young people. Contributing factors include non-use of helmets by 90.7% of riders, alcohol-affected driving at 38.3%, and non-use of seatbelts in 37.5% of cases. The forum stressed an urgent imperative for government intervention to prioritise children's safety on the roads. Additional suggestions include enhancing school transport safety through better management of school, bus, and field trip vehicle systems, encouraging helmet use, and embedding road safety education within school curricula, reported Tha Nation. Saree Aongsomwang from the Office of the Consumer Protection Board proposed developing a transportation safety curriculum and a special driver's licence for student transport vehicles, reiterating a need for immediate action to safeguard young lives. In a tragic coincidence, two individuals with mental health conditions were found dead from drowning in separate incidents in different subdistricts of Ubon Ratchathani, within minutes of each other, according to local authorities. At 09:20 on October 20, Lieutenant Phongrit Rukthai, deputy investigator of Mueang Ubon Ratchathani Police Station, received a report of a body found floating face-down in Huai Bo Kaew, Village 1, Hua Ruea Subdistrict. Rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of Mr. Polchai (surname withheld). There were no signs of struggle or external injuries. Authorities estimate that he had been dead for 1-2 days. Mr. Khomsak 44, who found the body, stated that he had left his house around 08:20 to take his daughter to buy snacks. He then went to check the water level at the location where the body was found, as he had intended to set up a fish net after the irrigation department had released water into the stream. When he spotted the body floating, he initially thought it was a mannequin. Upon closer inspection, he noticed hair and a foul smell, confirming it was a corpse. He immediately notified the village headman and police. Mr. Thanakrit 44, a relative of the deceased, stated that Mr. Polchai worked as a day labourer and suffered from some mental illness issues and epilepsy, requiring multiple medications from the hospital. He had been last seen at home the previous day, October 19, around noon, and was also spotted by a scrap collector near the location where the body was found. Concern grew when Mr. Polchai failed to return home for dinner and his medication, as he was usually diligent about taking his prescriptions. Just five minutes later, at 09:25 authorities received another report of a missing woman near the Mun Noi River in Tha Bo Village, Chaeramae Subdistrict. A rescue team deployed divers to search the area, and after about 30 minutes, they recovered the body of Ms. Kanchana (surname withheld), 46, approximately 20 metres from the riverbank.There were no visible signs of injury. Mr. Kamol (surname withheld), 43, her husband, recounted that his wife had been drinking alcohol with friends before returning home to bathe. He was feeding their daughter when he scolded his wife for drinking. In response, she sighed, went inside, hugged a photograph of her deceased mother, and walked into the river behind their house. Mr. Kamol saw her in the water and rushed to get a boat to rescue her, but she disappeared beneath the surface before he could reach her. Despite his best efforts, the water was too deep to save her. Authorities believe the drowning may have been triggered by feelings of distress from the scolding. Ms. Kanchana had been receiving hospital treatment for depression and had consumed alcohol, which may have worsened her mental state. A recent poll conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida) has revealed that a significant number of Thais are sceptical about celebrity endorsements. This dip in trust comes at a turbulent time following the iCon scam, which has heightened consumer wariness. The survey, conducted from October 15-16, interviewed 1,310 Thais aged 18 and over, spanning various educational and occupational backgrounds. The aim was to assess public opinion on the influence of celebrity endorsements on their purchasing decisions. Results show that 42.21% of participants felt no impact from celebrity endorsements on their buying choices, while 22.98% were significantly influenced. A smaller segment, 19.01%, admitted to a moderate impact, and 0.31% were either unsure or indifferent. When questioned about the authenticity of celebrities or influencers using the products they endorse, 52.29% doubted their genuine use. Only 3.89% believed these celebrities really use the products in their daily lives. This illustrates a prevailing scepticism among consumers regarding the authenticity of such promotions. The poll further delved into perceptions of promotions with heavy discounts or freebies. Over a third, 34.12%, associate these offers with low product quality. Meanwhile, 30.23% view them merely as marketing strategies. In terms of seeking assistance when deceived or treated unfairly in transactions, 24.81% of respondents would turn to the press for help, closely followed by 23.05% preferring to report to police stations, reported Bangkok Post. The findings of this survey highlight a growing distrust among Thais towards celebrity endorsements, reflecting a broader demand for authenticity and transparency in advertising.
