Maybe I should have stayed in the UK in the cold and the rain.

I would be miserable but my bank would work.

On which network are you currently Roaming? Make note of it and the try choosing another manually. Is Data Roaming switched on or off?

I use it mostly as a distribution point to send money elsewhere.

In that case, might not a Wise account be a suitable alternative? Or do you hold a significant balance with the awkward bank that you're unable to transfer elsewhere?

Data roaming is on.  Current network is True.

Way past my bed time.  I will look at this again tomorrow.

Switch Data Roaming off and then search manually for the network.

I guess it is possible.  The last time my giffgaff UK mobile was in the UK was about fifteen months ago.

I've had my sim 4 years and never been in UK in that time, BTW Giffgaff are still sending sims out abroad so probably the issue is your phone

That is possible.  My giffgaff SIM is in a 2016 iPhone SE.  I have a much newer iPhone 13 I can try it in.

Perhaps I am old fashioned but my main problem with Wise is that it is not a bank.

I am here on a retirement visa and I seem to recall that there are also problems with Wise in that a Wise transfer does not show in a Thai bank book as an international transfer.

I tried putting my UK giffgaff SIM in my much newer iPhone 13.  Still no OTPs received.

I had similar problems a few years ago not getting otp,s from my UK Banks...solution was simple I ditched True and went with AIS....ported my number over....never any problems since

I don't really understand this.  Surely you would only need to port the number over if you were receiving OTPs on a Thai phone.

My main UK bank only send OTPs to a UK mobile phone number.  I can select which Thai network to use in the phone settings and currently it is set to use AIS.

Presumably that was a different number to whatever you used before.

I am just trying to understand the nuts and bolts of this.

An unexpected but welcome development.

About twenty minutes ago I received 13 OTPs at once on my giffgaff phone.  These were mostly old ones where I was attempting to log on to my giffgaff account to test whether the OTP system was working on my phone.

Since then I have successfully logged onto my main UK bank account after receiving a OTP from them.

So all good for now.  Fingers crossed.
