Before 1972, political conventions were convened to select the candidates. Some people felt that a small group of people choosing a candidate was undemocratic. Thus, after 1972, the primaries became the means of candidate selection. Neither the primaries nor the convention was used to select Harris.

The first two days haven't been too rough in terms of violence by pro-Palestian demonstrators.  Relatively few arrests and so far no property damage beyond a section of the security fence and a burnt U.S. flag.
