The National Water Resources Office (NWRO) has issued a warning for 23 provinces across Thailand to stay vigilant for flash floods and landslides due to heavy rains expected to continue until August 22.

According to Surasri Kittimonton, Secretary-General of the NWRO, regions most at risk include parts of northern, northeastern, and eastern Thailand, as well as urban areas prone to water-logging.

The provinces identified as at risk for flash floods, landslides, and regular flooding due to poor drainage systems include:

Northern region: Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Tak, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun.

Northeastern region: Loei, Nong Khai, Nong Bua Lamphu, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, and Nakhon Phanom.

Eastern region: Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Chanthaburi, and Trat.

Authorities have also been asked to monitor medium and small reservoirs with water levels exceeding 80% capacity in provinces such as Chiang Mai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun, among others. These areas are vulnerable to sudden rises in water levels, overflow, and flooding along key rivers, including the Ngao, Pai, Nan, Yom, Kwai Noi, Pa Sak, Kam, and Trat rivers.

Additionally, the NWRO has cautioned that coastal provinces should prepare for high tides until August 24, which may compound the risk of flooding in low-lying areas near the Chao Phraya, Mae Klong, Tha Chin, and Bang Pakong rivers. Communities outside protective embankments in Samut Songkhram, Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Bangkok, and Samut Prakan are particularly vulnerable.

The 24-hour weather forecast indicates a 70% chance of thunderstorms across northern and northeastern Thailand, with heavy rainfall expected in some areas. Provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Loei, Nong Khai, Udon Thani, and Nakhon Phanom are expected to experience the heaviest rainfall, while coastal regions could see wave heights exceeding two meters during thunderstorms.

and regular flooding due to poor drainage systems

One would think that over the millennia they would know this happens every year and upgrade the drainage systems accordingly

I remember they asked the Dutch for help years ago.

They did a few things advised by the Dutch and then the money allocated went "missing".

Same problem every year.
