Prime Minister urged to tackle economic challenges burdening market traders

Market traders are expressing hope that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will address the economic issues plaguing the country, as increasing costs are affecting their operations.

 

During a media visit to the Bang Lamphu Market, located in Khon Kaen’s Muang district on August 19, traders voiced their hopes and expectations of the newly appointed Prime Minister. Wannida Nakcha, a 29-year-old meatball vendor, stated her need for economic relief, noting that traders are experiencing a slump in sales while their costs of operation spike.

 

Increasing prices isn't a feasible option, according to Wannida, as customers are also grappling with economic hardships and often voice their displeasure towards price increases.

 

As for the digital wallet money giveaway program, Wannida hopes for its continuation and suggests that more flexible eligibility criteria would boost its benefits.

 

Arayanee Niampradit, aged 62, manager of the Bang Lamphu Market, shares Wannida's concerns. Arayanee emphasized that the economic condition is a pressing issue for all traders and currently overshadows all other problems.

 

The market typically flourishes during the Hungry Ghost Festival, but this year's noticeable decrease in customers signals broader economic challenges. Arayanee hopes that Shinawatra won't take more than three months to instigate economic stimulation.

 

"In three months, we ought to know whether she has made the country better or worse," Arayanee stated.

 

Additionally, a fried banana vendor in the Maha Sarakham province sheds more light on the widespread economic difficulties, reporting that banana prices have doubled from 15-20 baht per bunch to 40 baht.

Every time I go to do the bulk shop I see prices have risen.... inflation is the culprit, that or just plain gouging.

I do all the shopping for our home. Her indoors can't get away from the cosmetic section. The first major food increase I seen was pork. It was always around the 70-80 baht mark. So 6 months later chicken went up but no where near the ridiculous price hike for pork.
