States cannot be trusted on principle. After all Britain and France had guaranteed Poland. Did they go and fight to liberate Poland? Not really. It would be Russia that liberates Poland. After incorporating Poland Germany should have stopped the war. But of course there was this fear of an invasion by Russia. Russia was the big hope of Britian too, why she would not give up, though she had no real means to fight. As already pointed out Churchill called for a coalition to oppose Germany as early as 1938. -

I don't think there is a relation to the DTV at all. In any case, if I were ever on a Tourist type stay again - or the DTV - I would just use known-safe entry points, who have historically followed the laws published in the Gazette - vs entry points known to make up things which are not the law. Nong Khai is a good choice, because they have a good record, and there is high-traffic - so we would find out immediately if "the bad guys" took over that entry-point.. -

Abc’s Muir needs to make a public apology
Think you are referring to my molar. Don't have real dentist offices here and have to do it at the hospital(shack). last visit was painful and the pain dragged on for weeks. I have good teeth and that was my first painful dental visit. On second thought, the debate can't be that painful. -

Most expats saw Thailand's retirement dream fading years ago and have left already. These are just last minute efforts to get rid of the rest of the Western expats. Nothing new. Just fleecing the remainder of the hanger oner's. -

What could be more sane than exterminating the Jews, who had done so much to advance German science and industry. And has been pointed out, when Germany launched its attack on the Benelux nations, Churchill wasn't Prime minister. -

Yeah the types that have tens of millions are already pretty well catered for in other countries. But there's well off people not quite in that league that they could target. The 17% tax would be appealing to some people if they extended it. That level of tax feels about right for what you get as a foreigner in Thailand. -

Replacement of new 5 year driving Licences.
I had to renew my UK passport recently, only a few months after renewing my 5 year Thai driving licences. As I will soon be going on a trip to Europe, I want to apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP). Only thing is, the DL's now have my old passport number, which I can see being a problem in bureaucratic Thailand. So I need to go to the DLT and get my licences updated. Has anyone done this? If so what was needed? All the same forms and documents as a renewal? Or just take the DL's and they will update them? Surely it can't be that easy. 🙂 -

In this case I would agree, but not true for everything, Sometimes you do get what you pay for. We were quoted 1m baht for the surgery at Samitivej and almost pressured in to signing up for it immediately. Vibharam (literally 5-10 minutes away AND closer to home) will end up being around 350k. Same operation. Same level of care. Actually a nicer room. Same food. No grand piano in the lobby, no Au Bon Pain, and a bit less English spoken which was not a problem for us - the doctors obviously spoke English, some of the nurses did not, but my wife is Thai and I can speak Thai. If insurance was paying I would have chosen Samitivej just based on reputation and the "luxury" factor. But it wasn't, and my wife didn't feel comfortable with the high pressure selling and felt more confortable with the doctor's bedside manner at Vibharam, so I saved 600-700k by going to another perfectly good hospital that didn't pressure us into making life changing (and expensive) decisions on the spot. At the end of the day I would have gone wherever she felt good as she is my children's mother and that is the only important thing, money was not a deciding factor as it was a potentially life altering decision. (I am not rich, but I could have found a way). Both my kids were born in Samitivej, my wife had a knee operation there many years ago, I paid for them all myself and was very happy. But in this case I can't see how anything would have been any better by paying for the name of a more famous hospital. Actually many of the same doctors also work in government hospitals and Sheryl recommended a very good one but there would have been a wait and we didn't want to take the chance of waiting.- 1
