Pattaya, at approximately 11.00, on September 4, a rescue operation took place for a Cambodian construction worker after he was buried alive when the side of a construction trench collapsed, in front of Wat Bun Samphan, Soi Khao Noi, Pattaya.

The worker, aged 28, was part of a crew working on a sewer construction project near the temple. The team was engaged in digging a deep trench when the ground suddenly gave way, causing the collapse. The worker was instantly engulfed by a torrent of earth and debris, leaving him almost completely buried under the soil, but his head was still visible.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with fellow workers frantically trying to reach him, while fearing for their own safety. Emergency services were immediately alerted, and within minutes, rescue teams from arrived on the scene. The operation was delicate and fraught with danger, as the unstable ground continued to shift underfoot.

Rescuers worked, using shovels, digging equipment, and their bare hands to carefully remove the earth that pinned the worker down. The team was acutely aware that any wrong move could cause further collapse and worsen the trapped worker’s condition.

As the final layers of soil were removed, the worker was finally pulled from the earth, alive and half conscious and was immediately rushed to hospital.

Darn look at that trench, and not shored up in any way. Hardly likely to hold up in the heavy rains.

It begs the question of why the operation is being attempted at this time of year!
