Registration Of Marriage

Featured Replies

Hello all,

The wifes passport is up for renewal, and we intend to go to the Thai consulate in Boston.

I noticed on the consular website, that marriage registration could be performed there.

We were married in the U.S and have recently built a home in Isaan.

The transfer of the land the house occupies has not yet been done (from father to daughter)....but will be done on our next visit. (if anyone is familiar with this process...let me know)

Should I register our marriage with the Thai consul?

Is there any problems doing it in the U.S. as opposed to Thailand?

Will this certificate assist in future visa's?

Will I need this certificate to get a tabien bahn (yellow)

any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric and Pan :o

That's interesting as all I find for that Consulate is below. What URL did you use?

If you are married in the USA you are also married in Thailand but perhaps they could certify/translate your marriage certificate for possible later legal purpose. You don't have to get married again however.

You have reached

The Thai Consulate of Boston MA

REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGE

The marriage parties are required to submit an application in person. Please make an appointment with the Embassy’s official in advance.

The following documents are required :

1. The marriage parties’ valid passports

2. A divorce certificate or court’s judgement is required if one of the marriage parties used to register marriage under the foreign laws

3. In case one of the marriage parties registered marriage under Thai law, a Thai certificate of Divorce or a court’s judgment is required.

4. Copies of Thai Identification Card or Thai House Registration, if any

For further information, please contact : Tel. 202-298-4810, 4812

Certificate of Marriage is issued free of charge

OK....this was from the Royal Thai Embassy site .....perhaps it cant be done in Boston? :o

It can not be done by you. You are already married. This is a marriage they are talking about (thus the need for divorce paperwork).

...We were married in the U.S...Should I register our marriage with the Thai consul?

When living abroad, in this case referring to your wife, it is always advisable to register with one’s consulate, and subsequently advise the consulate of any change of address and change in marital status.

If ever you relocate to Thailand and wish to apply at Immigration for an annual extension of stay for living with your Thai wife you will need a Thai translation of your marriage certificate. I believe this is usually obtained in Thailand and the translator’s signature certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If you can get a certified translation at a reasonable fee from the Thai consulate in Boston while you are there, you might as well do it, although I cannot say whether it will be acceptable to the Immigration office in Thailand as is or whether it will still need the additional certification (of the consul’s signature) by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

I can only speak from my own experience

I got married in Seattle and registered it there many moons ago, but never registered at the thai consul in LA or in Thailand. So far I have no problems with my passport or thai id renewal. But of course I never have to use the thai translation for anything in Thailand.

I'm confused......I know I'm married, but what is marriage registration? Are you saying that Thailand does not require us to register our marriage....ever?

Will my U.S. marriage certificate suffice if translated? (for visa issues, tabien bahn etc.)

I was hoping to get some clarity on the possible advantages or disadvantages of doing this stateside....obviously not a question I want to ask the consulate.....but hoped someone might shed some light.

Perhaps I'm over thinking this.....but there is such a thing as marriage registration....isn't there?

Marriage registration is the official act of marriage. But you already have a marriage registration (in the USA) which is fully legal in Thailand. You can not marry again. Your US marriage certificate is your marriage registration.

The only possibility is that there might be a system like the UK has where the Embassy will register, for a fee, and paperwork is then sent to UK for holding and could be used for legal reasons later. But even with the UK it is not required. As for Thailand have not seen anyone post of any such system. What you have described in the legal Thai marriage process.
