Parents Protest Govt's Move to Legalise Gambling, Save Youth

In a bold move today, a coalition of concerned parents and young people submitted a protest letter to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, opposing the government's recent policies aimed at legitimising the informal economy and legalising gambling. The policies include the construction of a multi-billion baht entertainment complex, which has triggered significant public outcry.

 

Leading the charge, Vasinee Sonsaeb, a mother and advocate, voiced serious concerns. She questioned whether these policies would truly promote tourism or bring in new revenue, suggesting instead that they might largely benefit private investors.

 

Vasinee pointed out that legitimising gambling could expose the youth to addiction, arguing that the Prime Minister should reflect on the potential negative consequences for future generations. The group proposes a different path: enforcing stricter laws and addressing the corruption endemic in government bureaucracy.

 

 

 

 

Among their recommendations, the coalition calls for scrapping the entertainment complex project and revising the policy to legalise gambling. They also urge for the amendment of the outdated Gambling Act B.E. 2478 (1935).

 

Furthermore, the group advocates for a shift in focus towards developing human resources, particularly youth, and improving child welfare. They believe investing in these areas could significantly benefit society without the risks associated with gambling.

The people that goes in and can play at casinos are already adults, so the parents have no need to worry. What they should focus on, is to teach their children about the dangers of gambling too much or lose control over their economy and many other things. After that, they can shut up.

Restricting the age for gambling will have little effect. There  is very little parental guidance for many young people in Thailand. 

You can witness youngsters   riding motorcycles without helmets arriving at school. Many reports of fighting between technical college students. 

Laws on gambling will have little effect similar to the silly restrictions on buying liquer during school hours every day.
