What's a mule account?

I believe it's a legitimate bank account that is opened up for the purpose of money laundering.

The person opening the account is the mule,  similar to drug mules but in this instance it's money instead of drugs.

The illegal types then may pay the mule for opening an account for them using his/her details.

Is the crime opening the account, or accepting monies from other persons and then making transfers?

This would seem to be a very difficult crime to spot in the first place.

Also, why wouldn't the young man just roll over on his confederates? Or why wouldn't they pay his bail and get him away before he rolls on them?

Corruption and scammers everywhere you look. Unfortunately, it is common practice in Thailand that you can use “money under the table payments” to buy some shortcuts or relief in the official legal system.

American politics in non American political threads should result in an instant ban from that forum. You're uneducated if you think it has a place in this thread.

He opened a mule account to facilitate anothers scam, and his mother gets scammed bailing him... Karma at work

Well, the story is that while being given a job in a restaurant, he needed to open a new account. Suspicious to you and I, but to an uneducated Thai that's desperate for a job, perhaps not. If that part of the story is true, which it may or not be.

Yes.

For example, with a mule account the real holder of it can sell things on facebook that don't exist, and get paid into that account. Sell drugs, fake investments, fake car down payments etc. All in the mule's bank name, not theirs.

You don't seem to know that Democratic voters tend to be college educated, whereas Trump voters are not.

College educated does not give you common sense. They are be indoctrinated into Marxism and Communism.  You should know better.  Does Harris seem educated to you?   Not me.

It didn't take long to come out with that B/S comment of a Republican.

The crime is opening an account for someone else.  In Bangkok there are signs all over the BTS stations warning Thai people not to open mule accounts.  Same goes for cell phone accounts, since they are trying to crack down on SIM cards used by scammers.

You two may have different ideas of what "educated" means. There's a difference between being brainwashed with propaganda, bringing one to conform with and echo the desired narrative, and being educated by training in various subjects in school to develop critical thinking, reasoning skills, and a broad understanding of the world, leading to not only possessing factual knowledge but also to the ability to think analytically, adapt to new information, and apply understanding to solve problems or make informed decisions. Anyone familiar with the so-called "education" in America these days, knows who controls the narrative produced from the universities. There are a number of studies that show that the universities are controlled/run (administration and faculty) by an incredibly disproportionate number of those who lean in the progressive leftist and Marxist direction... as in 80-90+% (much like most of the mainline mass media in the US). So, being "educated" can mean two VERY different things.
In the end, this is pretty irrelevant to the situation with this apparently ignorant ("uneducated") woman. The state of so many people here in Thailand is such that they are extremely easy to manipulate. So, intelligent, conniving people, who lack any decent moral fiber and have resources, can make headway like they'd never be able to among a more "educated" populace. Witness politics and the judiciary....🥴 It's sad to see people who are working hard and in difficult life situations, like this lady, get caught up in the tangled web that surrounds them. At the same time, it can also be easy to say that it's of their own doing. Life is complicated and the "uneducated" are so often left in the rubble of the complications, particularly when such a large mass of society is so self-absorbed that rarely is anything done about it. But reporting on it for rubberneckers to gawk and exclaim, blah blah blah, is about as far as it goes. I guess it makes them feel better, as if they're doing something about it by putting it in print.
