Bangkok surveys homeless and beggars, offers social aids; public complaints flood city hall

BANGKOK, Thailand – Spokesperson for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA),Ekwaranyu Amrapal, revealed that on the evening of September 27, BMA, led by Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon, alongside officials from the Social Development Department, Municipal Affairs Department, district offices, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), and local police stations, conducted a widespread survey of homeless individuals and beggars.

 

The areas covered included Sukhumvit in Khlong Toei and Watthana districts, Hua Lamphong in Pathum Wan and Pom Prap Sattru Phai districts, and Ratchadamnoen Road in Phra Nakhon district, which are known gathering spots for the homeless and beggars. The action followed numerous public complaints about disorder in these areas.

 

During the survey, authorities recorded personal information of the individuals found and informed them to leave the area. MSDHS also facilitated the return of some individuals to their hometowns and will work toward finding long-term solutions to address the issue.

Thailand has certain level of public and private homeless shelters.

But such information often doesn't reach those who need help most.

As many of them have no means of communications or info search.
