I knew the navy was in trouble, but I never imagined it had got this bad.

The Navy vessel HMNZS Manawanui sank after catching fire and running aground near Upolu, Samoa, this morning.

Head of Navy and Defence Minister Judith Collins praised Commander Yvonne Gray’s leadership during the nighttime evacuation in challenging conditions.

As said one woman about another! Not running the ship onto a reef would have been better "leadership".

Perhaps we will know why the ship ran aground in the first place after the investigation.

NZ seems to be having problems with captains of vessels with the inter island ferries running aground or driving into piers recently. Perhaps the good captains have all left for Australia to get paid better.

The captain of this ship is looking for a new job, perhaps he should head to NZ. 🤔

I'm tempted to agree, but I'd better not.

I just saw a documentary on Australia channel...ABC

Commissioned in 2019

$100M

Omg, what a waste.

I've been working offshore for decades, mostly on Drillships, the last costing $1B.

The captains are switched on, very knowledgeable.

This New Zealand captain should be hung from the gallows.

A 23 year old dive support vessel that underwent a 2-month conversion in 2019 for the NZ Navy role. It ran aground first and caught fire after listing. It sank well after the Captain ordered the crew to abandon ship with no loss of life. That's what Captains do.

Humor in human tragedy at sea?

I bet your incident and accident reports are chock-full of factual, evidence-based assessments.

The skipper was recruited from the UK. Apparently highly regarded.

I've spent a lot of time in the 'Islands' and am familiar with reefs in many of them although not here.

To take a vessel that size in close without first deploying smaller vessels to ascertain the terrain is unusual for a military operation.

However, <deleted> happens. I'm sure she is gutted about his and the ensuing environmental catastrophe which will be hugely expensive for NZ and more so with the dire financial position they are currently in.
