An incident unfolded when a 12-year-old girl drowned after being swept away by strong river currents in Sai Yok District, Kanchanaburi. The girl, identified as Fa Waree, had been playing in the water with two friends before being pulled under by the current. Her body was discovered 15 kilometres from where she had initially disappeared.

The incident occurred on October 12, when Fa Waree and her two friends decided to cool off in the river at Hat Khwai Beach in Wang Krajae Subdistrict. Despite the strong current, Fa Waree was the first to enter the water. Her friends, who remained on the shore, watched in horror as she was quickly swept away. Though she attempted to grab onto floating branches, the force of the water proved too much, and she disappeared before their eyes.

Fa Waree’s friends immediately ran to alert their parents, who then contacted the local rescue team from the Kanchanaburi Rescue Foundation. A search operation was launched, with hopes that the girl might have been washed ashore along the riverbank. Unfortunately, the search extended overnight with no success.

At approximately 10:30 on October 14, rescue teams finally located Fa Waree’s body near Wat Wang Krasae, 15 kilometres from the original site. Authorities retrieved her body from the water and sent the body for a post-mortem examination.

This tragic incident occurred just a day after another drowning in the same area, where a 25-year-old man lost his life after being swept away while swimming. His body was recovered shortly after.

Kanchanaburi Rescue Foundation volunteer, Khwanchai Teerasin, urged parents to be extra vigilant during the school holiday season, warning that drowning accidents are more frequent, especially during the rainy season when river currents are dangerously strong. He emphasised the importance of keeping children away from rivers and ensuring they do not play in the water unsupervised.

So sad what a waste of such a young life, why can't the schools give out these warnings on the last day of school, not just the parents. .............

Floods throughout the country, many reports of drownings in different areas.  Anywhere there is a river with moving water these days, people need to be advised to stay out of the water!!!

Parents too should use common sense and advise their kids to stay out of the water especially during flood season!!!
