Pattani, the southern border region was rocked by a violent car bombing incident in the early of October 24. Armed insurgents stole a vehicle and planted explosives, setting off a car bomb that left two security officers injured.

Authorities suspect the attack may be linked to the upcoming 20th anniversary of the Tak Bai incident, a pivotal event in the region’s history.

At approximately 12:30, Pol. Col. Chaiwat Panbunthong, Superintendent of Panare Police Station in Pattani, received a report that a group of insurgents had hijacked a vehicle and used it in a car bomb attack on the road between the Panare Police Station and the district office in Ban Panare, Pattani.

Initial investigations revealed that the explosion caused significant damage to the police station building, government property, and several vehicles, including both cars and motorcycles. Fortunately, all police officers were unharmed, though two civil defense volunteers who were on duty at the time suffered injuries. Both officers, whose names have not yet been released, were rushed to Panare Hospital, suffering from chest pain due to the blast’s shockwave.

According to reports, the stolen vehicle was a grey Mitsubishi Triton, license plate from Pattani, which had been taken from the Ban Nam Bo sub-district administrative organisation (SAO) earlier in the evening. The attackers, numbering between 8-10, overpowered and tied up four SAO employees on duty before seizing the vehicle and rigging it with explosives.

The car bomb was detonated on the road between the police station and the district office, causing extensive damage to both government buildings. The area has been sealed off by security forces, who are working to ensure it is safe for bomb disposal units to conduct a thorough investigation.

Authorities believe the attack was orchestrated by insurgents seeking to stir unrest in the region, coinciding with the upcoming 20th anniversary of the Tak Bai incident. The Tak Bai case, a tragic event in 2004 where 85 demonstrators died following a crackdown, remains a deeply sensitive issue in southern Thailand. With the statute of limitations for the case nearing its end, officials suspect that insurgent groups are using the anniversary to fuel tensions.

The investigation is ongoing, and security measures have been heightened across the region as authorities brace for possible further incidents.

They don't need an excuse to carry on killing and injuring people in their futile war.

My southern friend says police often stir things up to get a response. This is to ensure police are paid the extra “danger” allowance. Just another RTP plot to get more money.

All civil servants get hazard pay on top of their regular salary. That's why even my buddhist gf hopes that the explosions around us in Yala and Narathiwat will continue. I am so used to car bombs now. Just praying to the Almighty Lord that my partner and I won't get caught up in it.

To you outsiders: please come holiday here in the Deep South! You will have a blast and get to see a different side of this great country.

Islamic terrorism will always have its apologists-' I was made victorious with terror' - Muhammad quoted in Bukhari 2977. The history and causes of conflicts may vary, their response does not, they follow the prophet.

Can't say I've been paying much attention, but this hasn't gotten much media mention in a while, or has it?  Maybe things heated up when you-know-who returned to the country.

Once, while he was PM, he went to an ASEAN conference and let it be known that if anyone mentions Tak Bai he will walk out.
