A friend of mine left Thailand (bangkok airport) without exit stamp on passport by the immigration officer, as passport control was done automatically by passport control machine that checked the passport electronically and took photo of my friend, then the gate was opened

 

It's the first time that happens to him. Every time he left Thailand he always get an exit stamp by the immigration officer. It's this new thing normal? 😄

Many countries do the same.

As far as I remember it's been that way in Thailand all year. 

 

As for auto gates elsewhere, my passport is 9 years old and I don't have a single Aussie entry/exit stamp so not a new concept (have about 10 pages of Thailand stamps though)

Yes, that's normal, no exit stamps are given when using the auto gates.
