Inmates Clash in Min Buri Prison, Results in Death, Weapons Seized

A violent altercation between inmates at Min Buri Special Prison on November 9, has led to the death of one prisoner and the capture of six others involved. Authorities reported the incident occurred at approximately 09:20. Pol. Lt. Col. Rattanachat Boonsinphrom from the Min Buri Police Station received the report, prompting an investigation alongside Metropolitan Police Division 3 Commander Maj. Gen. Kiattikul Sontharanee, Min Buri Police Chief Pol. Col. Krit Gomnoy, and forensic staff from the Police General Hospital.

 

The incident unfolded beneath the dome in Section 5 of the prison, where corrections officers discovered the seriously injured body of inmate Yutthakarn, a Bangkok resident. Yutthakarn, a convicted criminal, sustained fatal stab wounds. He was rushed to Section 6 for urgent medical attention but later succumbed to his injuries.

 

Six inmates have been identified as the perpetrators of the attack and are now in custody. The accused are:

 

1. Narong – charged with money laundering

2. Panupong – charged with drug offenses

3. Chokthavee – charged with theft

4. Chatchai – charged with drug offenses

5. Weerayuth – charged with theft

6. Watcharapong – charged with drug offenses

 

The authorities seized several makeshift weapons used in the assault, including two sharpened metal rods with rope-wrapped handles and a spoon modified into a stabbing implement, all of which were retained as evidence. These items were secured after a thorough review of the prison’s surveillance footage, which allowed officers to reconstruct the incident.

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the dispute arose from prior tensions between two groups of inmates, from Romklao and Nong Chok, respectively. Reportedly, an earlier altercation led to members of the Nong Chok group assaulting Romklao inmates, fueled by accusations that one faction had implicated the other in drug-related arrests outside the prison.

 

Interrogations revealed that Watcharapong, Chatchai, and Weerayuth admitted to initiating the attack in retaliation. Their group allegedly pursued Yutthakarn, kicking and stabbing him repeatedly, which ultimately led to his death. The six inmates now face charges of group assault leading to death and will remain in custody within the prison.

 

Yutthakarn, who was serving a sentence related to assault and illegal methamphetamine use, had been incarcerated following a June 2024 conviction. In response to the incident, prison authorities plan to enforce stricter monitoring and conduct thorough inspections to prevent the use of improvised weapons within the facility. The incident has raised questions about prison security and the apparent leniency that allowed inmates to fashion weapons, prompting renewed calls for improved oversight in Thailand’s prison system.
