I’ve been considering something that I think a lot of people in Thailand’s unique environment often ask themselves: Is it better to stick with short-time encounters or to invest in a more traditional girlfriend setup?

Short-time has its obvious perks. It’s simple, transactional, and straightforward. No drama, no misunderstandings, no emotional roller coasters, and no navigating a woman's biological monthly ups and downs. Just a direct exchange that lets you enjoy the experience and the moment and then move on. Plus, the variety is a big bonus—you’re not tied to one person, and there’s always the excitement of someone new. From a practical perspective, it’s also much lighter on the wallet when paying per serving when compared to the ongoing running costs of maintaining a girlfriend or a regular partner. Meals out, trips, gifts, all that stuff.

That said, short-time can also occasionally feel too transactional. Sure, it’s convenient, but there’s also something appealing about having a deeper connection with someone—something that feels less commercial, even if it’s not a full-blown relationship. A girlfriend you see regularly might offer some added benefits, like greater passion, intimacy, or simply a sense of familiarity that you don’t always get in short-time encounters.

But then again, with a girlfriend comes the flip side: the costs, the time commitment, sacrificing some of your freedom, having to please another person, and the potential for drama or misunderstandings. Even the day-to-day effort of keeping a relationship going can feel like a grind. If your goal is to keep things simple and focused, as well as problem free, it seems a girlfriend might not be the best choice.

For those of you who’ve experienced trying both sides, what do you think? Do you say stick with short-time arrangements for their simplicity and low stress? Or do you think there’s some merit in having a girlfriend, even if you’re not looking for a full-fledged relationship?

Still, most regular users of short time I know of, go to the same lady, because they know what they prefer,

and they take her for breakfast the next morning to stretch it out into a quasi-real-girlfriend experience

I think it's pretty easy: Follow your heart.

If you see the same girl again and again, and want to see even more of her, then maybe ask her to be your girlfriend.

And if you don't see "the one and only", then see more than one.

And then there is of course the option to have a girlfriend/wife but from time to time an hour or two of entertainment.

I think by now the trouble with short time is that there are a lot less girls out there who I want to be with. Maybe I experienced the good times when the girls were younger and slimmer, or maybe I am just getting old.

And going out to bars and buying drinks is not exactly cheap anymore.

And if you see the same girl or girls for short times again and again, then you have most likely also part of the drama which you want to avoid.

Really?

For many it seems to be a mix of new girls, and if one of them is especially existing, then more of the same for a couple of times, and then a mix again.

I always have such a fantastic time when I go short time. Then afterwards, I often feel guilty as if I had to have done something wrong if it was that good. But I never see anything wrong with it and zero downsides, especially if you're above the age of 50 and single. That means you've done all the failed relationships throughout your life. So now you don't want any more of the drudgery and you only want the good stuff.

No, that's not short time.

Short time is great though. Kudos to whoever invented it.

So anything above 2 hours is not considered short time?

Short-time is a standard of one hour in most cases. Has been that way for decades.

Depends. If the happy ending at the end of a massage is just a herky-jerky, then no, that's not usually considered ST. That's a rub and a tug. Proper ST involves throwing the girl the bone and then letting Rover take over.

The problem with short time is knowing how many men they've been with, maybe even within the same day. I'm really not comfortable with going down on a woman like that and a condom is a must.

The best story I have from one of those I regulary met for motorbike riding who went to the same massage couple times a week for physical treatment, as what his wife thought, until she somehow discovered they where doing something more. How I do not now, but most likely an std. Falang wife moved out, massage lady moved in.

I've seen that so many times in Thailand. Such a common and repeating narrative. But it's usually no more than five years until the man regrets the mistake that he made.

If you have concerns about being in a relationship, and have responsibility, don't. And if short time gives you the fix you need, go for it. Not really difficult, but I guess those with your mindset, choose both, and establish an relationship and have fun on the side.

Anyway, the real reason most choose ST only, is most likely because of the money they think they have to spend to keep the relationship going in an healthy way.

Going down is relatively low risk. Many men are also now on PrEP, which prevents HIV transmission. Much less risk now without condom.
