Question about border crossing to start over

Greetings everyone, I am in the need of advice. 

 

Maybe 4-5 months ago I posted about a "small" issue I had with my dad's retirement visa, in short due to immigration not saying it and his bad eyesight, that part that you must not touch 800k, Well touched it, around 100k a few weeks after extension (other than that everything else is good, never dipped below 400k, money is there 2 months prior to extension) . While I am hoping for the best as we are planning to go this Wednesday or Friday, I am also prepared for the worst. 

We live not very far from Chiang Rai, and I have heard that there is this boat crossing in Chaeng Saen, not entirely sure where, but I have heard about it. My question is if we go that route, cross the river (apparently now have to stay overnight) then back, apparently you get 60 days. Is that 60 days a tourist visa? Is it possible to convert it to retirement when we get back, and start that whole process again? Are there any other better options? I am looking at what is available, I haven't left the country since 2020 personally, so I know there are a lot of changes that were made for example Vientiane is no by appointment only and takes months, which would not work. Singapore only makes visas for those residing in Singapore. Considering that my dad is old, I am trying to see what the simplest way would be to go about it. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

You are referring to visa exempt entry.

Currently that provides a 60 day stamp (permission of stay) 

That plan is for need to start over.

I assume he does not have a reentry permit in his passport.

Thank you so much, I will plea his case and see what they can do. But our immigration (Phayao) is insanely difficult to work with. I did talk to them about it about 2 months ago. They said most likely won't extend, also said maybe you can get him on dependent visa (but we have no embassy or consulate here and that requires birth certificate for procession). 

I have read the link you posted and as I understood that 60-day exemption in Chiang Saen, is able to be converted to non-O again. 

May I ask what is needed to for exemption? Just passport or some other documents or fees? 

Laos visa of course I think, doubt they operate in the way Mae Sai did back in the days that for a fee you can just come over.

Visa exempt entry via air or land border requires your passport.

No forms No fees.

 

He could exit Thailand turn and reenter and receive a 60 day stamp.

Now regarding the thread link I posted earlier you will see that to obtain the Non O retirement the 800k is needed to be in bank on day of application.

Note: also needed to be shown as coming from abroad

In your father's case that should not be required as the funds have been in Thailand for some time.

The process is not difficult and outlined in that thread.

For the non O application from visa exempt entry he uses TM87.

Chiang Khong is only a little further and much easier to get a bus to there.  But if you are driving yourself I guess you can go to either one.  They both have the 1 night rule currently.

Just make sure if you are going with him, that you get a re-entry permit from your home immigration before going, since I assume you don't want to start over along with him.  And make sure he does not have a re-entry permit or his extension won't be invalidated when he leaves.

I can tell you from experience that if you take any money out of the 800K before the allowed to date..They (CW) will not give you an extension. You, as I have to.. must exit and start over again.

Follow the good Dr's advice above. No prescription needed.  😆

One (slightly strange) thing to note for anyone obtaining Non O in Bangkok is that if have a tourist visa entry you obtain the non O at CW (TM86) and if have visa exempt you attend LakSi  IT mall (TM87)

Side question here as not wanting to open a thread for a small matter.

 

If you withdraw an amount from your 800K, Is your three months after renewal (where you cannot withdraw), timed from when you OBTAINED your renewal, or the expiry date of your renewal.

 

For example, if your renewal expires on 18th July 2025, but you renewed in June 12th 2024, is the three-month period from June renewal date or the July expiry date?

From date of application. Extension granted

Not expiry of permission of stay.

Thank you for the information yeah that is a bummer that you can't just do it in one day anymore like it was in the past. Now I have to stay overnight there. Actually, on that topic I do need a Laos visa I would assume. Last time I have been to Laos was 2016 in Vientiane, at that time I needed a visa. I hope there is no rule on which crossing can you get visa and which you can't.

I really hope something can be done, but if not then I guess it is what it is. I will need to look up all the Laos rules I guess, since I haven't been there in a while, if visa is needed or not.

   Its 2 nights at the  Chiang kong crossing .

(I am there now spending my 2 nd night)
