A Cambodian woman in Rayong province has been hospitalised after refusing to eat for an extended period following a dispute with her husband. The woman, who became bedridden and infested with maggots, was rescued by local emergency services after neighbours alerted them to her deteriorating condition.

 

Premasak Karnjangkul, a rescue worker from Siam Rescue Rayong, Ban Chang Unit, responded to a distress call from residents in Ban Chang subdistrict, Rayong. Upon arriving at the scene, they found the woman in a shocking state, emaciated, emitting a foul odour, and with maggots crawling from open sores on her body. She was immediately taken to Ban Chang Hospital for urgent medical care.

 

The woman, identified as Mrs. Rang 43, had been living in the home with her five children, ages 10 to 17. A neighbour, Ms. Khematiti 35, who reported the case, shared details of Mrs. Rang's past and her tragic decline.

 

According to Ms. Khematiti, Mrs. Rang was once a beautiful woman married to a handsome man. However, her tendency to become overly jealous led to struggles with depression. Before falling ill, Mrs. Rang had reportedly attempted self-harm during arguments with her husband, who had moved to another province for work.

 

The couple frequently quarreled, and after a recent argument, Mrs. Rang stopped eating altogether as an act of protest. Although her husband continued to support the family financially, sending money for rent, utilities, and other expenses through Ms. Khematiti, he rarely returned home.

 

Mrs. Rang's children tried to care for her, feeding her small amounts of food, but she ate very little and eventually became bedridden. Her condition worsened, leading to the horrific state in which she was found.

 

Authorities are continuing to monitor her recovery and are working with social services to provide assistance to her children and family.
