USA passport authentication

Thai wife having a baby soon. Bangkok hospital wants my USA passport translated to Thai and they want my USA passport authenticated by the USA embassy.

no problem but the nurse states I have to get the translation papers of my USA passport  from English to Thai authenticated by the USA embassy as well as my USA passport .

makes no sense to me. Any USA dads in last 12 months dealt with this issue of getting a birth certificate for a baby in Bangkok.

if yes in Bangkok and yes in last 12 months and yes USA father and Thai mother please help me understand what I need the USA embassy to do. I have an appointment with the USA embassy next week.

also if you have a translation company you recommend in Bangkok please share their information and costs.

thank you. Anyone have any nasty things to say about having a baby please move on and refrain from sharing your negative opinions.

You've slightly misunderstood. The Embassy authenticates a copy of your passport. You get the copy translated and authenticated at the MFA. There are translations services at the MFA and around BKK who can handle it for you and mail the official translation to you. Be sure to tell the translator that the translation must match that on your marriage certificate, if it exists there.

Her name is Virginia and has an office across from US Embassy. The number is old but worth a try. She helped me with my kid's first passport.

Thank you. What you stated makes sense to me.  I did not understand the nurse and we had miscommunication.  Thank you for explaining the process to me. 😊

Wow.  I can't believe this is seriously a thing.  I'd find another hospital.

Miscommunication between nurse and me. Not affecting health care.

Remember to make an online appointment with MFA, else you'll be at the mercy of the goons that grab all the daily appointments each morning and sell them to the folks turned away at the registration window as all slots are taken.

i think someone is pulling your chain.. Or it is a new policy from only the hospital. They actually do not need anything from you. Your name is only added as father and proof of your citizenship is not required. It is not a requirement though. She can give birth without you and she can add your name as the father. No identification is required from you to submit that document to get a Thai birth certificate also.

The US embassy usually has a list of recognized (by the embasy anyway) translation people.  Authenicating the passport is really strange as that is an "official" US govt document so just the official translation should be okay.  I haven't heard of the embassy authenicating a passport, though I have heard of have it "approved" by the Thai foreign ministry though others here might have a different story. I did a consular US birth certificate for my daughter and used the Thai official birth certificate and don't recall having to translate US passport nor embassy certification of same.  Good luck anyway and congratulations!
