In a significant development, Syrian rebel forces have reportedly entered Aleppo, marking the first time opposition fighters have reached the country’s second-largest city since government forces recaptured it in 2016. The rebel advance comes after a surprise offensive launched earlier this week, which saw the capture of several villages and the reactivation of a conflict that had largely been stagnant in recent years.

Russians and troops loyal to the Russian-backed Syrian dictator Assad continue to retreat in northern Syria as rebels push into Aleppo, Syria's second largest city. Here, rebels have seized a massive depot of Russian weapons, ammunition, and military equipment. The rebels are advancing so rapidly that OSINT analysts cannot keep up with mapping the changes.

“Our forces have begun entering the city of Aleppo,” announced the Military Operations Command, a newly formed rebel coalition. This claim has not been independently verified, and CNN has reached out to the Syrian government for confirmation. The Syrian military, however, described the situation as a “major attack” by “terrorist organizations” equipped with heavy weaponry and drones.

Rebels are expected to consolidate forces for a press on to Damascus and Russia's military base.

The Military Operations Command stated it had taken control of the Syrian government’s Military Scientific Research Center, located on the city’s outskirts, following “intense clashes with the regime forces and Iranian militias.” Meanwhile, an artillery strike at Aleppo University’s student housing earlier in the day claimed the lives of four individuals. Syria’s state news agency, SANA, attributed the attack to opposition factions, but rebel spokesperson Hassan Abdulghani dismissed these allegations as “baseless lies.”

This offensive represents the most significant escalation in hostilities between the Syrian opposition and President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in years. Assad has ruled Syria since 2000 and has withstood more than a decade of civil war. In response to the rebel surge, the Syrian military stated it was “reinforcing all locations along the various battlefronts.”

Total and complete Russia-Assad collapse in Aleppo today.  Assad’s biggest military defeat in 13 years of civil war and Russia’s biggest setback in the Middle East since intervening in 2015.

The renewed violence has exacted a heavy toll. According to the White Helmets, a volunteer rescue organization, at least 15 civilians, including six children and two women, were killed in airstrikes and shelling targeting rebel-held areas in Aleppo and Idlib’s countryside on Thursday. Additionally, Iranian state media confirmed the death of Kioumars Pourhashemi, a Brigadier General of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), in Aleppo.

Iran and Russia, both staunch allies of Assad’s government, have voiced their positions amid the unfolding conflict. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a call with his Syrian counterpart, accused the United States and Israel of “reactivating” the rebels and reaffirmed Tehran’s support for the Syrian government and its military. Similarly, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov urged Syrian authorities to “quickly restore order” and reestablish constitutional control in the region.

The Syrian civil war, which erupted during the Arab Spring in 2011, began as a crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations against Assad’s regime. It escalated into a full-scale conflict, with the Free Syrian Army emerging as a prominent rebel force against government troops. Over a decade of war has devastated the nation, resulting in more than 300,000 civilian deaths and displacing millions, according to United Nations estimates.

As the battle for Aleppo reignites, the fragile balance in Syria faces new challenges, threatening to further entrench the divisions that have plagued the country for years.
