Question regarding application for PR (permanent residency) by investment or retirement?

Dear Aseannow members,

 

Here's another one...

I was wondering what the requirements are in case one would like to start application process for permanent residence (PR), EITHER BASED ON;

 

1. INVESTMENT (would purchase of government bonds or a condo or property leasehold of 30 years qualify and if so how much min required)?
2. RETIREMENT  (would 3 extensions of stay based on retirement from non-O qualify? If so, will I still need to show min income or x amount of taxes paid)?

 

Obviously, this all given that you have held at least 3 annual subsequent extension of stay from Non-O. Can anyone also shine it's light if an extension of stay (based on retirement) can qualify. FYI, I'm retired from working in Thailand and am not married to a Thai citizen either.

There are few guys on AseanNow that have Permanent Resident status. Also some that have Thai citizenship. 

You haven't had replies.

Hopefully someone can post first hand experience.

Easiest answer and to save you reading a 165 page long thread is;

 

Nope. neither investment nor retirement extensions qualify you for PR

 

Your only option is to go back to work for many many years and apply (3 for the application and then while it is processed).

Unless you are working here, and can speak a bit of reasonable level Thai, then the answer is unfortunately, 'no'.

So "Permanent Residency" is based on working here, otherwise it's really a no go? I don't work in Thailand, or anywhere anymore, but today while doing my 8th annual marriage extension, the Immigration Officer was trying to convince my Thai wife that I should switch and apply for "Permanent Residency". Not really sure what it would help or hurt going forward, the marriage extension isn't very hard for us to deal with, we've become experts at getting everything ready fairly quickly and easily.

As you correctly pointed out, without working in Thailand (and you would require a salary of 100,000 Baht per month generally) permanent residence application is a no-go.

 

I suspect the IO's just want as many off extension due to marriage as possible as it is more work for them for no benefit and the IO was maybe just throwing out random ideas.

Yes, employment and payment of personal income tax for a minimum of three years is a requirement for PR. There is a minimum salary requirement, too.

 

It is possible that the immigration officer may not know that you're not employed as an extension based upon marriage does not preclude employment.

 

Probably the main benefit of PR is not having to obtain an annual extension of stay and also having one's name in a blue tabien baan which serves of proof of residence for any and all things Thai.

Thanks guys, I wasn't sure why they were pushing it, so thought I would ask here. I guess that option is out, can now stop the wife bringing it up anymore 😉
