Im watching Greg Gutfeld show, as I do ever morning with my coffee.

 

Its the highest rated cable show out there and regularly beats the Jimmy Kimmel types.

 

For the first time, since the old Ontari-ari-ari-ooooooo fishing and canoe commericals, right at the most expensive 10:30pm time comes a gorgeous, beautifully produced commercial touting how important Ontario is as a trade partner, lets develop to the future together.

 

And I, like millions of other Trump voters watching were saying, no problem hosers, just do what you are told.

No, they are not petrified. Most are clueless as to what awaits the North American economy. Yes, some of the US stakeholders in the Canadian subsidiaries are  worried.  Other Canadian stakeholders are acting in an appropriate manner and preparing to counter the ignorance of tariffs. The Ontario advertising campaign was planned and announced  months ago. Ontario is the USA's 3rd largest trading partner.   Two‐way trade between Ontario and the US exceeded US$354 billion in 2023 and has risen 26% since 2018. The province was the top export destination for 17 US states last year.

 

If Canada imposes retaliatory tariffs like it did last time Trump started his bullying on Aluminum and Steel, many Republican states will suffer. Last time, the USA backed down relatively quickly once the Governors and Congressional members pointed out the economic damage the US tariffs were causing.   Beware the peril of hubris. Every time Trump pokes the Canadians, it usually costs the USA something.  Look at how many Republican states are dependent on exports to Canada.

Americans should be petrified at the potential devastation that is coming due to incredibly ignorant and poorly thought out tariff policy, which is essentially an enormous tax hike on the average American, and a major issue for tens of thousands of American companies that manufacture overseas, including Trump himself.

Be patriotic and simply 'buy USA' .. then no issue with any tariffs 

 

That is what people want, and why they voted the way they did  

 

Those against tariffs would be the folks buying imported goods, not caring about the America worker, production, jobs, stronger, more independent USA.

As a "born in Ontariariarioooo" guy, I have to say that I am petrified. Petrified that Trudeau will stuff things up with his empty leftist rhetoric and knee-jerk platitudes. He has had 9 years in power and managed to nearly impoverish the country. IF Canada were the 51st state, it would rank 50th in per capita GDP, just edging out Mississippi in the race to the bottom. So I actually think Trump woudn't want us.

If you think the threatened tariffs will actually be implemented, you completely forgot about the first Trump term.  It was Trump who negotiated and signed the current free trade deal with Canada.

They have bought gold sneakers ( made in China ) and Trump bibles at a hefty premium. Trading cards, and shares in a company that is so far from making a profit it may as well be on the moon.

 

The decline in American quality of goods began in the early 1970's, when short term profits were given precedence over company reputation.

 

A personal experience of this was when I bought a pair of Florsheim shoes in the early eighties. Superbly made, I still have them.

 

Ten years later, I bought another pair. Utter garbage that wore out in 5 years.

 

America can't renew its manufacturing base behind a tariff wall. That only has companies producing goods of inferior quality, with the same old focus on short-term profit.

Please let me know about your experiment with buying American, let me know how much access you're having, let me know how much research you're having to do to find the products that you want to purchase that are truly made in America, not made by American companies, not designed in America, but made in America. It's fairly easy to buy an American car even though 60% of the components are sourced overseas, but what about your other household goods? What about your electronics, what's the last TV that you've purchased that was made in America? Tell me about your home theater. 

 

Please let us all know about your success story.

World wide, countries import German, Japanese and Korean cars. The Chinese are coming as well, mainly with EV's.

 

Damned if I can think of any country that imports cars made in America. Except Canada.

Damned if I can think of any country that imports cars made in America. If they do, it's probably a drop in the sales bucket.

Though I do agree with what you're saying, my reply was to a fairly thoughtless post about buying American. There are a lot of people who consider themselves patriots and they feel as if buying American is a way to show their extreme level of patriotism. But they don't put that much thought into the process, yes you go buy an American car and it's probably made in America, but how many of the components are American? That is questionable, but when it comes to all the other aspects of your life buying American is not such an easy thing to do, though it may be a worthy objective.

The subject matter concerns US citizens living in the USA.   I'm not one of them, so tariffs don't affect me at all.

I did correct my post, 42% of cars in Canada are American - made.

 

Which does make me wonder what Trump would do for the auto industry if Canada slapped tit-for-tat tariffs on American cars, given the UAW endorsed the Biden/Harris ticket.

I should have thought that shoppers/consumers everywhere in the world look first at price, second at quality/performance and - if at all - national origin a distant third.

Price yes but quality goes hand in hand with where it's made, so avoid China and USA is my motto.

My patriotic duty ended when I left the US Army.  Paid my taxes, when I had to, for almost 30 years.  Left USA in 2000.  We're (USA & myself) are on our own.  I'm doing my thing, it's doing it's thing.
