A student lost his life after a football goalpost collapsed on him while playing with friends at a school sports field in Phuket.

The incident was reported to Pol Lt Parachaya Siyoam, an investigator at Wichit Police Station, prompting authorities to inspect the scene at Ban Ao Nam Bo School, Wichit Subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District.

At the scene, the school principal, Mr. Ophas Khongyot, and local community leaders were present. Preliminary reports revealed that Master Thanakrit, the 10-year-old victim, had been playing with classmates, hanging on the crossbar of a football goalpost during a break. The structure suddenly collapsed, causing the crossbar to strike his head and knock him unconscious.

Emergency services from Wichit Municipality arrived promptly and rushed the injured boy to Vachira Phuket Hospital. Despite efforts by medical staff, Master Thanakrit succumbed to his injuries due to the severity of the head trauma.

The incident highlights safety concerns around school equipment and serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of regular inspections and precautions to prevent such incidents. School officials are now working with authorities to investigate the cause and ensure the safety of students moving forward.

The school community and the victim’s family have been left devastated by the loss.

The poor lad (and his mates?) were hanging off the crossbar.

It is not designed for that.

I'm guessing they were swinging on it and it eventually fell forward, either landing on him or hitting him if he was standing in front of it .

Done it before as a kid but smaller goal size.

can only be a few causes from it happening. Either it was not secured to the ground properly or the welding holding it together was done with shoddy work causing it to break.

Either way does not change the end result. Kind of like the mall that had the water slide on the roof that broke apart while patrons were sliding. Blame and responsibility will be circumvented and the family will receive little to no compensation for their childs death.

It's not designed for that granted, but... looking at the goal-post end and the support for the rear of the net it wasn't secured to the ground in any way....

Ha, you and your Western health and safety!

A tragic accident which, rightly or wrongly, the Thais seem to accept as a part of daily life - much like on the roads.
