We are in the same age bracket, and I’m not fully aware of any potential age-related implications regarding vehicle insurance. To address this, I transferred ownership of my car and its insurance to my wife, who is significantly younger than me.

That's my intention also, I hear that Rojjai wont insure past age 75 but am looking for info/options (yes, I have emailed Roojai this morning).

I'll be 75 in two months, how does that effect my Roojai Class I insurance and what are my options.....please?

TIA

Insurance should not be based on age.

I've got friends in their 70's, they ride their 1200cc Ducati's with ease and competence but I see younger guys without the skill set that's required to ride these powerful machines.

I reckon genes have a lot to do with competence and skill set, have the Insurance look and compare our genes

A lot of people on here have posted that Roojai won't insure drivers over 70.

If they're insuring you already at 74, I don't see a reason why they won't continue.

Best wait for you reply I guess.

I'm OK with gov min insurance, driver details not required, anyone can drive the car.

Why do you need 1st class?

Take your pick.

Good for you, I'm not.

Because I do!

Because I'm a farang and accidents do happen and I have assets in Thailand I want to protect via insurance.

But this thread is not about any of those things, it's merely about trying to get information so please don't sidetrack.

I'm with Roojai at 71 but also thought the max insured age is 75. Like one of the posters i will transfer the car/insurance to my partner then (but lose my NCB).

I suppose a follow on question if you do that is, will your wife's insurance policy still allow you to drive the vehicle?

The Roojai website indicates that they only insure drivers 30-70 years old.

Possibly solutions - seek out alternative vehicle insurance companies which will insure drivers 70+ years old, also, as suggested above, change car ownership from self to spouse/family member/friend/etc.,  and list yourself as a secondary driver (no problems, I have been told).

Having only compulsory insurance is not advised, as noted above.  This is Thailand, where the law and law enforcement are "flexible", farang friends who have been involved in accidents have told me (and this has not been my personal experience) that even though an accident is not your fault, because you are a farang/foreigner you are frequently considered at fault, as you are "rich".

Good luck.

Roojai and most I expect have policies for the main driver and the primary driver, which would be you if you decide to change.

In UK, and I guess other countries, vehicle insurance is partially based on YOUR JOB! How silly.

You change from being a rock musician to being a school caretaker, does that change your driving habits.

They also take your age into consideration saying that the premium is based on past experiences, as does your Postcode by saying more cars were stolen in the street next to yours, so they pay more.

Why do you need 1st class?

To fix YOUR vehicle in the event of write off, stolen, fire etc.

If your car is worth Sweet F A , then, no, 1st class is not worth it if even available.

Mine is 12 years old but I still have 1st class on it via Roojai. But other companies put a limit of 7 years on it.

Thailand vehicle insurers insure the vehicle, NOT the driver, it's just that there appears to be a maximum age at which a person can apply to insure their vehicle.....please let's not sidetrack again!

How was I sidetracking?

OK, in Thailand, someone over 75 cannot apply to insure their own vehicle, they must do it in someone elses name, even though it is the vehicle which is insured.

About as silly as using the job in UK.

This is a question I asked of Roojai in 2023. Text of the exchange below. This was a general question to them but I was more interested in my bike Class 1 insurance because the car is insured in my (not much younger) wife's name.

Subject: Insurance Cancellation at 70 Years Old?

I have been told that Roojai car and motorcycle policies are not renewed after the driver reaches the  age of 70 years old.

Is this true please?

Thank you,

abcdef.

If they don't insure you as first driver at age 75, why do you think they still will insure you as second driver?

Think easiest way would be to change insurance company

Roojai do not insure drivers. They are brokers and if they cannot offer insurance to us who are 75+ it would seem obvious that they have already done the searching that you suggest.

Car Insurance rules are changing for new cars 1st January 2025 for all cars 1st January 2026

Overhauling "car insurance" for the next 20 years, forcing name identification and calculating premiums based on risk

“The reason why the OIC wants to adjust the terms and conditions of car insurance policies this time is to make the insurance premiums more in line with the behavior of each driver. In the future, the OIC will be able to collect more individual driving behaviors, and drivers who frequently have accidents should pay higher premiums.

Unfortunately for us oldies, insurance companies use statistics to assess risks, not genes, (which I suggest would be a rather intangible way of going about it anyway)

I still ride a motorcycle, quite competently at 78 years, (something I attribute to skill and experience rather than genes) But despite my albeit self assessment of my abilities I am unable to obtain additional insurance beyond the compulsory requirement.

Just one of the many irritations that can potentially spoil our day as we age. If we let it.

Sorry, I can't reply to your comment.

Apparently my comments are unhelpful, they keep getting removed.

Insurance brokers are a dime a dozen and can provide policies from multiple insurance companies.  Vote with your feet and take your business elsewhere.

Brokers may be 'a dime a dozen' as you say, but brokers don't set the rules. It's insurers who do that and if they have, collectively decided to 'shut the door' on us oldies, then there's nothing the brokers can do about it.
