Si Sa Ket colder than Chiang Mai now?

As Chiang Mai is packed full of tourists from down south to enjoy the cooler winter temps I see this. Are these numbers bogus or is Si Sa Ket colder than Chiang Mai now? All over Isaan is colder too apparently. Maybe the million+ cars and pollution are creating a heat island and ruined the weather? From the looks of it you want to be in Isaan or central Thailand by the Cambodian border to enjoy the winter in Thailand. 🤔

Yes, totally bogus. Thailand measures temperature in different units. This must be Si Sa Ket, Alabama and Chiang Mai, New Mexico.

Here's another curious one. You know Pai that mountain town which is 800km north of Si Sa Ket, sits at 500 meters elevation (where Si Sa Ket is 150 meters) and is surrounded by mountain peaks reaching 1500+ meters?  Well Si Sa Ket has a lower minimum temperature.

 

I see the Bangkok tourists driving up north to Pai and wearing hats and mittens but they should have just gone to east to Si Sa Ket and it would be even colder? 🤔

I live on the thai/lao border in Isaan and it is often cooler than Chiang Mai.  THis year has been by far the hottest here.  The prior 4 years were cold from October to mid March in the mornings.  Think it hit nearly 40c in mid March this year.  Have a nice jungle view so thinking if it is hot this coming year, just going to close off more of the patio with glass and pretend it is cold with the AC.  Have extra solar so it's free.

Apparently the colder temps in the north are over stated. No idea why all the people come traveling here this time of year then. It gets 40c+ in the north too, I don't think it's much different in that regard. I've only passed through Isaan and it was noticeable hotter and humid (but never in the winter) so I'm incredulous  that it's getting colder way further south and at lower elevations.

 

The one time I went to Vietnam the weather was far cooler than Thailand  so maybe there's a weather pattern that carries  over.

I find it always hot in the south with rare exceptions.  Isaan is just a little hotter and probably cooler than inner city Chiang Mai(lived 6 years). I'm on a three day camping trip the last  3 days in N Isaan and it is 18c in the mornngs.

I'm in the mountains in the north and it's 18c now (confirmed by my own readings) but will settle to the same temps as Si Sa Ket in the morning apparently.

 

Weather in CM is always hotter and it lingers in to the night. Older people tell me it used to be cold in CM but it's not anymore. Even way outside the city in the outskirts get the heat from the city. No place to spend the winter if you're traveling from down south.

Sakon Nakhon is, statically the coldest region in Thailand and right now it feels that way. Long sleeved sweaters and woolly hats needed in the mornings right now.

 

Great for walking though. I'm out every morning at this time of the year.

I was in Ubon Ratchathani and Sisaket and it WAS cool in the evening, night and early morning. Very nice!

 

Heading back there tomorrow 🙂

I was in Sisaket a couple of days ago and it was 11C at 4am

Today it's not "cold" at >both< places.

Chiang Mai city is one or two °C higher than most of Isaan.

We had a first cold wave but now relaxed.

 

People come to experience cold temperatures on the mountains and not in a city.

Medium range forecast for CM shows not less than 16 C in the morning, max up to 28 C. No cool.

The weirdest weather may be in Loei. Car window had ice in the morning and car didn't had defrost nor heater...

The Himalayas don’t have anything to do with the surface temperatures being farther south or not. It’s the elevation is what matters.

And why do you think does southern US down to Florida experience freezing temperatures by the occasional blizzards coming down south?

Because there is no barrier that protects.

Florida is on no altitude and about same latitude as Chiang Mai.

The higher elevation mountains tend to get colder at night than the lower elevation valleys like where Chiang Mai is located.

Kinda a Rule of Thumb. 😃

Checked Goole and it was 60F at 8:30am in Samoeng and 69F in Si Sa Ket. I can confirm the temps in Samoeng are basically correct.

I'm confused as well!

All weather channels are saying it's not COLD - but it IS! We're sleeping parkas on.. under two thick blankets.

PS. Norwegian National source has closest real temps. Still to high but within 3 deg of real.
