It's that time of year again when the smog blankets the country in a hazardous haze.

I've seen it as high as 200 today in some places.

every year it's the same shtick.

nothing is ever done about it.

people complain for a couple of months and then once Songkran comes all is forgotten until next year.

when will this ridiculous merry go round end? It won't

will they ever be able to curb the annual pollution problems in LOS? No

it is especially dangerous for children and the elderly, supposedly vulnerable groups but it seems nobody gives a stuff. Correct

why worry when you've got amulets, right?....Correct

I've answered your questions for you, you're welcome.

Actually, I with my wife have a house in CM so understand the "burning season".  But daughter now in college in BKK so we are renting a house (have dogs) in Prawet district of BKK and since I bought a 2.5 micron meter years ago, I still would check the pollution level here in BKK - it has been over the WHO safe limit (37) more often than not for the past 18 months.  Some days after heavy rains, it does go down some but sometimes not at all.  Like out of the last 2 weeks for sure, only 2 days was the level in the safe zone while some days it has been flashing "red" almost as soon as I turn the meter on.  We live in a mooban that is heavy with mature trees and lots of bushes and even some open fields so it is not like a crowded streets daily bit.  I usually measure the pollution in the early AM

3-5 as that is when I take the dogs out to do they business and there is seldom any traffic at that time.  Just saying, SEA IAW the NASA satellite, is more red than green always IMHO.  One also can google AQI Thailand anytime and see the measurements all over the country.  Need good filters in the house and masks whenever going outside IMHO unless one moves to a non-polluted area.

I dont have a wife or kids or dogs so I just upped and moved to Cambodia. Easier

amulets don't cure cancer...

Choose a superior set of genetics next time before entering this realm, then you won’t have to worry about cancer

There's no comparison between Thailand and Cambodia but good luck.

well, the smoke in SEA is not limited in spreading by borders - Based on the satellite data, Cambodia too has its share and being sandwiched between Thailand Laos and VN - have you noted the last few days that Hanoi has been #1 polluted city in the world?

Its 112 right now at the one air station. Far better than Bangkok, consistently.

Well the air is better in Cambodia. The traffic is less. I will say the quality of hardbodies is less. Cheaper. Less busy.

Bit I dont poke fun at your choices do I? Are you even in SE Asia?

The air is better here. And Visas easier, but I digress.

Ah, bob, as always, you’ve hit the nail squarely on the head and in more ways than one. The annual smog apocalypse is now upon us, and yet again, the Kingdom is shrouded in a hideous, toxic blanket of unbreathable air. A haze so thick you could cut it with a machete. Honestly, I’m thinking of ditching sunscreen altogether this year and just going with an industrial-grade gas mask and hazmat suit, it’s all the rage now in the hub of minging air, or so the wifey tells me.

But please don’t you worry about us bruv. My amazing wife, being the forward-thinker she is, has already implemented her very own Smog Survival Campaign. She’s outfitted the house with military-grade air purifiers, two in every room, including the doghouse. She’s even had an oxygen chamber built underground in the garden for when we need “fresh air.” And for the villagers? Oh, she has sorted them too by distributing free N95 masks and bottled oxygen to all who can’t afford it. They now refer to her as “Lady Lung Saver.”

As for the “amulets,” you’re spot on there too mate. My wife’s already been to the temple to pick up a few extra anti-smog blessed ones. Supposedly, they’ll protect us from the tiniest of invisible PM2.5 particles, but just in case, she’s also funding a local campaign to buy a giant fan fully fitted with multiple hypersonic water jets stationed along the perimeter of the village to pump the smog back up into the sky. Innovative, isn’t she?

Will the merry-go-round of smog ever end in the land of lung destroying air? Probably not. But with my wife leading the charge, at least our village is turning the haze into a full-blown opportunity to rescue everyone and save the day. Never let a crisis go to waste, right, bob?

The prevailing wind across much of the country is from the north east and has been for a few days. It suggests that much of this pollution is being carried down from China. Even here in Sakon Nakhon we seeing unhealthy levels (147 AQI) and that's quite unusual for this area. Go to the link below and press play.

yeah, I view the local tnn thai news weekdays at 6 AM and they show the wind directions so have seen where they come from but with the same old ways of clearing land for planting, searching for mushrooms, industry, etc We are basically surrounded by the pollution producers even if they convinced all the locals to cease the burnings,  I flew up from bkk to NKP many time 50+ years ago and can easily recall how it was just about impossible to view any land as the smoke covered the whole north eastern area.  Once the burning starts, the NASA satellite picture makes Thailand almost totally red with active fires.

There's very little burning is our area nowadays. Mechanization is taking over and burning is being discouraged. Plus we have no sugarcane around here, thank goodness. Right now though I can see that the whole country is suffering from a blanket cover of bad air.

yeah every year it only seems to worsen as they claim that they are doing more each year to stop it!  Sirta kuje sine if the other promises we fail to see them keep.  Oh well, it still is paradise, just not with a capital P anymore
