In response to the recent attention on the human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in China, Thai Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin addressed public concerns yesterday at the Department of Health Service Support. He assured the public that hMPV is a seasonal virus that is typically self-limiting and rarely requires medical intervention.

Minister Somsak explained that advancements in disease control have made it easier to track and manage such viruses, although they have existed for years without much focus. This underlines that hMPV, while newly named, is not as severe as it may seem.

To prevent the virus's spread, Somsak recommended simple health precautions like wearing masks, maintaining hand hygiene, and consuming clean and cooked food. He stressed the importance of not succumbing to undue anxiety, reminding the public that modern media allows for thorough research and dissemination of accurate information.

He also highlighted that the situation in Thailand is less concerning compared to China, reinforcing that hMPV is not typically fatal and should not be a significant cause for alarm. His statements aim to reassure the public while emphasising the importance of basic preventive measures.

Not a new virus, even the pensioners likely had this as children.

Yes in the news I have been reading the Chinese hospitals are getting over-capacity and people are dying from respiratory problems associated with this virus.

How can it be different? If anything it can be worse. China has more hospitals and better doctors. Thailand will take no action to check Chinese tourists if they are infected. So, if anything Thailand will ignore this until it creates havoc in their own country. Meanwhile, the WHO has warned 3rd world ASEAN nations with lower health care to take action to prevent inbound travellers from China saying this virus can overwhelm their health care options.

Probably not a serious virus except for the people affected by the smog coming.
