The fact is that even the poor Westerners are better-off than the middle class in developing countries,

Really?

My impression is that middle class Thai people are better off than poor Americans because of the elevated costs of living.

Let's take one example...

Naam Ngiao 50B $1.44USD

Middle Class Thai people earning 500B per day can afford this.

What would the equivalent cost in America?

Probably $8-15 for lunch at Subway or McDonald's.

That's expensive for poor Americans.

Their budget is a $5 bean and cheese burrito at Safeway or the gas station.

And good luck finding a $5 burrito anymore.

Maybe $8 up.

Inflation.

Some urban middle class individuals in developing countries might have a comparable lifestyle to lower-income Westerners.

Cost of living:

While a "poor" Westerner might have a higher income, the cost of living in Western countries can also be significantly higher, impacting purchasing power.

Thais like McDonalds too. And Pizza Hut and KFC etc.

The only reason they’re eating a 50 baht Thai dish is because they can’t afford a 200 baht Thai seafood dish.

In some ways Thais have it easier (an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables for cheap or even free from the neighbors).  In some ways Americans have it easier.  Have you seen how nice some section 8 apartments are?  I ran across a really nice apartment complex when I was in university but nope….couldn’t rent there.  It was for poor people.

Of course, in Appalachia it’s a bit different.  That’s poor.  Not Spike Lees version of the inner city poor.

How many Americans are living like a school teacher in Issan?  I have met some that still bathe from a cistern and just recently had flushing toilets installed.  They cook outside over charcoal.  They don’t even have windows in their homes.  That’s middle class.  Poor live in corrugated metal shacks or bamboo with teak leaf roofs.

Where many poor Americans kill themselves financially is that they

1.  Don’t cook at home.  Don’t bring a lunch to work.  It’s all grub hub and door dash for most of the urban poor.  They won’t even walk their fat asses to the McDonald’s or Subway that you talk about.

2.  Won’t get a roommate or live at home with their parents. They all have to have their own place.  That one way is how the Asian, Mexican, Central Americans etc. get ahead.

3. Eat too damn much.

4. Spend too much on alcohol and drugs (mostly cannabis)

5.  Finance cars that they can’t afford and if from the hood…buy rims.  You can even rent rims for your car in the hood.  No shortage of Bimmers, Benz and Lexus in Compton.

6. Spend too much on Air Jordans and other BS fashion accessories.  Second hand shops are for the urban hipsters from upper middle class families who find it fashionable to slum it.

Poor people in America are living large.

And they still want their student loans forgiven.

I’d love to drop some inner city hood rat in Bannok Thailand and see how he or she (or it) copes.

That  is your opinion, which really counts for very very little here.

Anyone that thinks the US is getting along fine must be one of the 3 monkeys- the blind one.

If we're going to get a monarch, let's give citizenship to Nayib Bukele, currently the president of El Salvador, and make him king.

I like having the king of England as monarch. Means we don't have to pay for another useless politician.

It's not like he interferes in the country.

IMO the US doesn't have democracy for it to fail. For that matter I don't think any western country has democracy. It's just a sham imposed by the rulers to make people imagine that they get a say in how the country is run, IMO.

Well said, and absolutely true.

In NZ they made it confusing, which lets people pretend it makes a difference when it doesn't.

I am reminded of when the Brits used to say " To be born British is to win the lottery of life".

Apparently it sucks to be an American if you need pharmaceuticals to keep yourself alive.

You know I read this forum with my breakfast.

Yet, with knowledge of the time zones, you have chosen to post a pic guaranteed to make one vomit.

Good one.

Not really.

Lot of idiots voted for an idiot.

And when a majority do that, then this is democracy.

I think they deserve what they voted for.

The problem is we, the rest of the world. We don't want that idiot to "rule the world".

Then do something about it "rest of the world" you are smarter than us so come up with a plan.

Are they  ?

Everyone I know, tells me it's just another day, and little (except inflation) has changed much at all.   But, like myself, they don't live their life through divisive MSM.

Ones that still work, do that, enjoy their family, weekends with kids.   Retired folks get out & about as much as possible.

I'm sure much of the middle part of the country still seems about the same to many people, except for inflation and exorbitant housing costs.  Peoria, Illinois, Des Moines, Iowa, Dallas, Texas, Columbus, Ohio.  All normal as can be, especially in the suburbs.  But what starts on the coasts has a way of spreading.  In any event, any place that I would want to move to is already seeing its share of trouble. It's all theoretical, though.  I'm not going back anytime soon.

I left there for several reasons, and until I see a few fundamental changes, I won't be back.

I would implement certain criteria for politicians. I.e. if they are constantly deliberately lying, then out!

And I would implement criteria for voters. If they are too stupid, uninformed and ignorant then they should have no right to vote.

Obviously, it would be very difficult to implement any of this. But it seems to be necessary. Otherwise especially American idiots will continue to vote for the biggest idiot who wants that job.

Ai, the American way,

And this used to be comedy, now reality

Big fat zero ∅.

When you guys repeat those stupid KGB talking points it really does make you look gullible and dumb. 😅

The KGB was dissolved after Gorbachev, its called the FSB now. When you spew nonsense, try to make it look good.

The word democracy is like the word love. It's so abstract that it's hard for 2 people to define it the same way and hardly means anything.

Let's say the president decides to vote on abortion. And 51 per cent like it and 49 per cent don't. Technically, that's democracy, but still half the population is miserable because they don't get what they want.

It's like that for just about any issue. Not everyone agrees on everything. So people will always be upset about something.

The movie is from 2006, and it was supposed to be about the future in 500 years. It seems it didn't even take 50 years...

It is not that easy, they did not vote for yes or no to abortion, they voted for the package. And to be true, who should decide the matter of abortion? The religious? ?Dr's, Women only? Or those who just vote for Maga? And could not care less about abortion?

"While public support for legal abortion has fluctuated somewhat in two decades of polling, it has remained relatively stable over the past several years. Currently, 63% say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 36% say it should be illegal in all or most cases."

Do you believe that an American working as a cashier at, say, Kroger's deserves to have a home, a car, a family, and maybe take a one week vacation to somewhere different once a year? Or must they live like illegal aliens, ten or fifteen to a house built for a family of four?

That has nothing to do with the post I was responding to.  But nice loaded question anyways.

Do you feel a Thai working as a cashier at tesco deserves to have a home, a car, a family and take a one week vacation somewhere different once a year?

Or must they live in a fan room, with 4 of their friends to be able to eat some rice at the end of the day?
