Drunk Driver Crashes Pickup into Restaurant After Smashing Power Pole
Picture from responders. A 51-year-old man, suspected to be heavily intoxicated after Chinese New Year celebrations, crashed his off-road pickup truck into a restaurant in Si Racha, Chonburi, after smashing through a power pole, causing extensive damage. The incident occurred at approximately 00:30 on January 29, near the entrance to Khao Din Wanaram Temple in Nong Kham subdistrict. Police from Nong Kham Station, led by Investigating Officer Pol. Lt. Nopadon Wandi, rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the crash. Upon arrival, officers found a white Toyota pickup truck, registered in Chonburi, severely damaged after colliding with a power pole, splitting it in two. The vehicle then crashed into the Baan Tua Note restaurant, destroying potted plants and a snooker table. The truck’s front end was completely wrecked, with its rear axle broken. Authorities promptly coordinated with the Provincial Electricity Authority to cut power in the area to prevent further hazards. The driver, identified as Mr. Santi, 51, sustained injuries and was found to be heavily intoxicated. Rescue workers from the Pure Yeang Tai Si Racha Foundation provided first aid before transporting him to hospital for treatment. Initial investigations suggest that Mr. Santi had been drinking heavily in celebration of Chinese New Year before driving at high speed. The crash occurred at a curve in the road, causing him to lose control and crash. Police have charged him with reckless driving, causing property damage. Further legal proceedings, including negotiations for compensation to the Provincial Electricity Authority and the restaurant owner, will take place once he has recovered. -- 2025-01-30
