Three Killed, Two Injured in Pickup Truck Crash in Kamphaeng Phet

A crash claimed three lives and left two others injured when a pickup truck collided with the rear of an 18-wheel sugarcane lorry just five kilometres from home. The collision occurred at around 13:00 on January 19, on the Khanu Woralaksaburi-Bueng Samakkhi Road in Kamphaeng Phet province.

 

Police officers and rescue workers arrived at the scene to find a grey Isuzu D-Max pickup truck, completely wrecked after crashing into the stationary lorry. Three passengers were pronounced dead at the scene: Mrs. Aksornsawan, 29, the driver’s wife; their daughter, Nanrinee, aged 1 year and 8 months; and their nephew, Thanakrit, aged 9. Two others were injured, the driver, Mr. Sermrit, 31, sustained arm injuries, while his 7-year-old daughter, Nanthanaphat, suffered minor injuries to her arm and leg.

 

Rescue workers described harrowing scenes, with blood and debris scattered across the road. Mr. Sermrit was found weeping inconsolably as he held the lifeless body of his young daughter. The nephew’s body had been thrown from the vehicle upon impact, while Mrs. Aksornsawan’s body was trapped inside the crumpled pickup, requiring rescue teams to spend over 30 minutes cutting her free.

 

The family had been returning from a trip to Bueng Si Fai in Phichit province and were mere minutes away from their home in Yang Sung subdistrict, Khanu Woralaksaburi district, when the collision occurred.

 

The driver of the lorry, Mr. Somsak, 50, told police he had pulled over with his hazard lights on to check the tyres of his truck, which was fully loaded with sugarcane bound for a factory in Nakhon Sawan. He said he was about to drive off when he heard a loud crash and discovered the pickup had slammed into the rear of his vehicle.

 

At the hospital in Khanu Woralaksaburi, surviving family members gathered to identify the deceased, overwhelmed with grief. Mr. Sermrit’s 7-year-old daughter clung to him, visibly shaken by the ordeal.

 

Police are continuing their investigation, including testing Mr. Somsak for alcohol or drugs, and are reviewing whether the parked lorry’s positioning contributed to the accident.

Sounds like the nephew wasn't wearing a seatbelt and the toddler was not in a proper seat.
